SWAN, NORMAN &Quot;NORM&Quot; WINFIELD 73, of Placitas, New Mexico, passed away on February 11th after a valiant battle with cancer. Norm was born on May 13th, 1939, to Ted and Hazel Swan of Mount Shasta, California. He graduated from Mount Shasta High School in 1957. He married his best friend Roberta Jeanne "Bobbi" Ball and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 14, 2012. Norm was a natural athlete and standout high school and college baseball player. As a pitcher he threw right-handed and batted left-handed. After attending Shasta College in Redding, California, he decided to follow his passion of baseball so he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where baseball players were often recruited. It was during this time he met his future bride Bobbi and they were married on April 14, 1962. He broke into the minor leagues when he was recruited by the Kansas City Athletics. He pitched including the Albuquerque Dukes in 1961 and the Minor Mallards in 1962. After 4 years of baseball life on the road he decided to leave the sport and put down roots. He lived in Burney, California from 1963 to 1973 where he worked briefly for his father and later for Fruit Growers Supply Company. During this time his son, Robert Norman Swan was born on December 5, 1964 and his daughter Kristina Louise Swan was born on December 3, 1967. It was also during this time that Norm became a Master Mason and later on a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner, he embodied their principles of strong moral character and family values. In 1973 he moved to Boring, Oregon, East of Portland, where he was a regional supervisor for Publishers Forest Products, Inc. and Bobbi was an executive officer of Clackamas County Bank. In 1987, after their children were in college, Norm and Bobbi moved to Redondo Beach, California where Norm managed a large retail lumber yard and Bobbi was an executive with City National Bank in Beverly Hills. Ten years later, they retired to Placitas, New Mexico, where Norm enjoyed spending time with great neighbors, working in his yard, and attending baseball spring training In Arizona. Norm and Bobbi also enjoyed traveling together, touring much of the United Stated, visiting the Holy Lands and mid-east and tracing their roots through their ancestral lands of Scandinavia. In regards to baseball, Norm had an encyclopedic mind and could recall names, teams, years, stats like no other. He was one of the few people who could watch a baseball game on TV and listen to another on the radio and follow both. He was known for using baseball as an analogy for everything, there was never a problem or situation that could not be explained in baseball terms. Norm was loved by all who knew him and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude to The Cancer Center at Presbyterian, Dr. Bernard Abemadzo and Dr. Elizabeth Ward who were a wonderful support to Norm as he fought his last battle, he finally hung up his glove and put his bat away as the battle could not be won.
