KAILER, JOHN D. (J.D.) Born April 16, 1921 in San Diego, CA to Joseph and Lillian Hendry Rountree. When J.D. was a baby, his father died and when he was six, he and his mother moved to live with family in Altoona, PA. When his mother married F.S. Kailer in 1935, they moved to Pittsburgh where he graduated from high school. He graduated from the University of Illinois and then entered the service, trained with the first cavalry at Ft. Riley, KS, and served with the 112th Regimental Combat Team (RCI). After landing in New Guinea, J.D. served in the South Pacific until the war ended. In addition, he was a frequent contributor to Yank magazine. J.D. was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. After the war he graduated from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism where he met his future wife, Pat Stangebye, a fellow journalism student. They graduated in 1947 and moved to Roswell, NM to join a fellow classmate on the Roswell Morning Dispatch. They married in Roswell in February of 1948 and moved to Albuquerque in January of 1949. J.D. was sports editor of the Albuquerque Journal from 1950 - 1959. Finding himself the only one in the department, he initiated an innovative freelance stringer network, utilizing local high school sports editors to cover their respective schools' games. They earned only 10 cents an inch, but the byline was the real prize. Some familiar names of the one-time stringers are Bob Matteucci, Jim Carroll, Ben Moffett, and lawyer Mike Sutin. Three major assignments during his Journal years were covering the emergence of Lobo basketball fervor under Bob King, reporting the incredible performance of the 1952 Lobo football team, and covering Jim Hulsman's Albuquerque High's stellar basketball teams. After the Journal, J.D. moved into sports radio and television, serving as a sports anchor on Channel 13 and later on Channel 7 for several years. Some memorable interviewees were Muhammad Ali, Johnny Weissmuller, Jim Ryan, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente. Baseball was his first love and he particularly enjoyed attending major league baseball spring training in Arizona. In 1970, he became executive director of UNM's Lobo Club. In 1976, he started a high school sports program business, which he ran until his retirement in 1989. J.D. was on the board of directors for the Albuquerque Boys and Girls Club, a driver for Meals on Wheels, and co-founder and president of the Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame (now the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame). He later was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the UNM Hall of Honor, and the Albuquerque Isotopes Baseball Hall of Fame for his journalistic work in sports. He was an honorary member of the UNM Alumni Lettermen's Association. Other fond experiences included playing lead roles in a couple of plays at the Albuquerque Little Theatre. J.D. was loyal, empathetic, and generous. He was interested in nearly everyone he met. He had the heart of a servant and never failed to ask people, "How can I help you?" When he received help, his response was, "Thank you for your courtesy." J.D's family wishes to thank the staff at Emeritus at the Cottages for their loving care during the last two years of his life. J.D. is survived by his wife Pat, to whom he was married nearly 66 years. He is also survived by son David Kailer and daughter Ann Eversole, both of Albuquerque, and son John Kailer and wife Debby of Pittsburgh, PA, and his six grandchildren: Kelly and Jamie Kailer, Elyse Eversole, and Kristen, Justin, and Katrina Kailer. He was a member of Hope Evangelical Free Church and attended CBS (Community Bible Study) at Grace Church. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m at Hope Evangelical Free Church, 4710 Juan Tabo NE. HANCOCK, WILLIAM H. &Quot;BILL&Quot; 1923-2014 William H. "Bill" Hancock, age 90, a resident of Belen, NM passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014. In the last two years of his life, my father often said, "I have lived a good life. I had a good family. I loved my family." He repeated this phrase often, as it was the truth of who he was in life, a man who committed fully to family and to work, and who was admired for his leadership and commitment in his work environments both in the U.S. Navy, as well as for 30 years at El Paso Natural Gas Company in Gallup, New Mexico. And, he was the quintessential father, both for his two daughters, as well as for other children who wanted to tag along, needed a bicycle fixed or someone to listen to their stories. One recently shared that he really didn't care for fishing, or for fish, but he would go anywhere with my father. Bill Hancock was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 8, 1923. His father, William Jay Hancock, of the Mormon faith, was in the precious metals business. His mother, Catherine McLaughlin Hancock, a Catholic, was a teacher who helped open schools to children of the mining families in Raton, New Mexico, where Bill, his brother Charles and his sister Marie grew up. Bill played basketball and football for Raton, High School, where he graduated in 1942 and soon after entered World War II through service in the U.S. Navy. Bill also served in the Korean War. Bill met and married Ann Frances Pavletich in Raton. They had two daughters, Mary Ellen Hancock, who lives in New York City and Belen, and Ann Frances Hancock-Hunt, who died in 1990. At the time of his wife's death in 2011, Bill and Ann had been married for 65 years. They had enjoyed a long and happy retirement in Belen, where they were parishioners of Our Lady of Belen Parish. Bill helped organize and play in "the Gaggle" at Tierra Del Sol Country Club in Rio Communities. A life-long golfer, Bill, played golf for 30 years with the New Mexico Seniors. Bill Hancock is preceded in death by his mother, Catherine; his father, William Jay; his sister, Marie; his wife, Ann; and his daughter, Ann Frances. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ellen; his brother, Charles; his sister-in-law, Catherine; nine nieces; and a nephew, as well as numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The family wishes to thank Bill's friends and his neighbors; his caregivers Donna, Laura, Pam and Dan; his doctors and nurses at the V.A. Hospital in Albuquerque, especially in the GU Department, as well as the V.A.'s amazing Geriatrics At-Home Primary Care Program; Belen's Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels Program; Sol Amor Hospice Group; Our Lady of Belen Parish and Romero Funeral Home. Funeral services are being arranged through Romero Funeral Home. Services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 15, beginning with a Visitation at 10:00 a.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 10:30 a.m. and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. A Memorial Mass and Interment will be forthcoming in Raton. Bill Hancock achieved an exceptional legacy: he lived a good life and he loved his family. He was a wonderful father, friend, and neighbor, and he will forever be remembered and loved by all who knew him. Sign Bill's online tribute at www.romerofuneralhomenm.com Romero Funeral Home, 609 N.
