RUE, RUTH ANN (SEARLES) Age 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep January 9, 2014 in Stewartville, Minnesota. Born December 30, 1930 on the family farm west of Elgin, Minnesota, she moved to Spokane, Washington at the age of 19 determined to make her own way as a secretary after deciding she had no desire to be a farmer's wife on the cold plains of Minnesota. There she met and married Ardell C. Rue, a WWII veteran and Greyhound bus driver. On a windy night in April of 1963, the Rue family, which now included three young children, arrived in Albuquerque in a Plymouth station wagon with all of their earthly possessions towed behind in a small U-Haul trailer. The family settled in and Ruth fell in love with New Mexico and saw much of it over the years as an avid hiker, cross country skier and motorcycle rider. Ruth worked 21 years at the University of New Mexico, retiring as Chemistry Department Secretary. She grudgingly returned to Minnesota three years ago for health reasons and to be near her daughter and niece who are nurses at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Ruth is survived by daughter Ellen Wellik and husband Kevin of Stewartville, MN; son David and wife Cherie of Tijeras, NM; son, New Mexico State Senator Sander Rue and wife Wendy of Albuquerque; and grandchildren Sander, Jarryd, Braden and Madisyn, Chelsea and Christy. Per her wishes, she was cremated and a private memorial service will be held in Albuquerque at a later date.
