CHANCE, KATHERINE (RUIZ) Artist, Healer, Organizer, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Teacher, Priestess, Shaman, Leader, Friend. Born July 3rd 1955, took her last breath on the 13th of January 2014. You might have known Chance by one of her many names as she embraced new identities throughout her life. She began as Katherine Ann Berg then Katherine Barbosa, Katherine Rhodes to Chance Katz and most recently Chance Ruiz. To watch Chance dance in the desert underneath the stars, was to know peace is in the world; to hear Chance recite the Tzolkin around a Sweet Fire, was to know the Priestess; to share a meal with Chance was to enjoy life; to see her love for her family was to see the Goddess. Chance lived her life serving those in need. She spent years training people to assist those with disabilities for the New Mexico Department of Health, as well as for the Therapeutic Life Center. Beyond this, Chance's work in her community was her life's opus. Whether she was pulling out invasive species at the 3SidedWhole, or organizing a parade at the Kosmic Trading Post, the goal was always to create a more welcome space. She hosted successful and deeply spiritual, women's retreats, Full Moon Circles, and workshops. Her attention to artistic detail gave rise to masterful skills in bead work, painting, and altar building. Chance's home life was just as heartfelt. As a single mother of three in Los Angeles, Chance inspired her children to always be kind. She once brought a homeless family into her own house, and it is just one example of Chance's open-hearted nature. She always supported her children's creativity and ingenuity without judgement. Chance always held space for those on the fringe of society, regardless of their past or circumstances, or whether someone was an artist, traveler, indigent, a friend, musician, or even the unknown outcast. She had compassion to the nth degree, because of her ability to turn her compassion into action. She always found time to support and connect with those who needed it, because she was always giving. At the center of Chance's life was her selflessness. The rapt attention she gave to others - how she made us feel important - was her gift. She loved us with her amazing smile. She was never phony or fake in friendship. It will never be enough to say how beautiful she was, how much light she gave, or how deeply she loved. But what she gave to this world transcends body and time. Even after death, she gives us life.
