BLACK, CONRAD Conrad Black, 97, departed us in his sleep at his home in Albuquerque, NM on January 10th, 2014. He was born a 1st generation American to Romanian parents Alexandrui and Victoria Cerghizan on October 14th, 1916 as Constantine Cerghizan in Indiana. At an early age, his father passed away. When he was 8 his mother married Charles Black, also of Romanian descent. He was one of 9 children and is survived only by his sister, Victoria Hayse of Indiana. As a very young man, he joined the Army Air Corp and was trained as a pilot. He flew the European Theater for the end of WWII and was particularly proud of participating in the Berlin Airlift. After the Army Air Corp, he joined the Air Force and spent the next 27 years there. He served stateside during the Korean War and in Vietnam from 1967-1968 and retired in 1970 as a Lt. Colonel. He highly valued education and throughout his air force career attempted to secure a college degree but often had to withdraw from various universities due to being transferred or deployed on a flight mission. He finally obtained a master's degree in education post retirement from the University of Texas El Paso where, he and his family moved after his military retirement. He taught high school for 17 years there and after his second retirement, substitute taught into his 80's. He was a beloved husband to Jean, who survives him and to whom he was married to for 55 years. He married Jean and her 2 daughters, Tanya and Janice. They have 2 more daughters from their union, Ginni and Cheri. He had 3 children from a previous marriage, 2 who survive him, Conrad Jr. and Dan; Donna Sue preceded him in death. He has multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. Conrad and Jean moved to Albuquerque, NM in 2002 to be close to their daughters and grandchildren. He was always up for a "road trip" and loved to travel. When he was 90, he parasailed in Hawaii with his daughter Cheri-perhaps he couldn't get enough of being in the air, or he just liked to fly by the seat of his pants. He loved to cook and was a master griller as well as the great admirer of red wine and imbibed in a glass most every night. As he often stated, he was not very demonstrative, but to us, he was a poetic warrior. We will cherish many of his favorite quirky sayings. He will be fondly remembered for his quick wit and easy smile. He was truly a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by his surviving family. His grandchildren Geer and Nicandra DiRaddo were privileged to have had him in their lives from an early age and loved him greatly, spent many wonderful times and felt his inspiration to the end. His daughters, Ginni and Cheri, were blessed to have had him in close proximity, and he is their hero beyond measure who demonstrated how to live and let go with the utmost courage, integrity, and dignity. All of their lives continue to be filled by his presence still. You did good work Dad. Now it's time for evening prayer!

WACLAWCZYK, MARY ESTELLE SISTER May 20, 1929 - February 3, 2014 During a rare and beautiful snowfall, Sister Mary Estelle Waclawczyk passes away on Monday, February 3, 2014, at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent in Rio Rancho, NM. She was born on May 20, 1929, to William (Willy) and Mary Lee (Dzuik) Waclawczyk of Cestohowa, TX, and was named Edna at Baptism. Edna received her grade school education through the Felician Sisters and by the time she made her First Holy Communion, she had made her decision to become one of them. On July 2, 1943, she traveled to Chicago, IL to begin the first step of this choice as a High School Student at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. Upon her graduation in 1947, she entered the Felician Order in Chicago. In 1949 she began her 51 year classroom teaching ministry with a combination of second and third graders. For the next consecutive 21 years she taught either two or three grades at a time. Sister's education ministry sites included Chicago, IL; St. Hedwig, Cestohowa, Panna Maria, Bremond and San Antonio, TX; Aston and Exeter, NE; and Arcadia and Claremont, CA. To this day, her former students, as well as parents, remember their "best teacher" with visits or some other form of communication. Sister did not stop after 51 years in the classroom but when she was transferred to Rio Rancho, she quickly channeled her education skills to tutoring at St. Felix Pantry. Sister Estelle was also an accomplished seamstress and baker. She is well known for her many and varied crochet projects. In addition to her teaching, she also served as sacristan in most of her teaching locations as well as during her years in Rio Rancho. In all things, Sister Estelle was a perfectionist and all her gifts and skills were used to the best of her ability to make life easier and more pleasant for others. Sister had a special gift for growing violets and every year she would start as many plants as she had students so that every child she taught could present their mother with a potted blooming plant on Mother's Day. One of her most cherished experiences was to visit Poland and to kneel on the same kneeler which Bl. Angela had used for adoration. In addition to her strong devotion to Bl. Angela, Sister was a person of prayer who was mindful of the suffering and the needs of others as she prayer for the needs of the world. Sister Estelle was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Frank, and her sisters Magdalene Urbanczyk and Emma Opiela.
