WHATLEY, J.R. Age 55, passed away in Albuquerque on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at home with his family at his side. With a world-class sense of humor and lean, good looks to go with it, J.R. won over legions of friends and co-workers during his short life. He reveled in being the funniest man in the room. J.R., was born James Russell Whatley, in Ft. Worth, TX on August 14, 1958 and moved to New Mexico when he was 12. J.R. attended Valley High School where he spent more time in the parking lot than in class. He learned the plumber's trade at TVI, but traded up in 1993 with what would become a 17-year career at Sandia National Labs. Hard work and disciplined study earned him advanced certifications to write complex computer code for automated buildings. He had a brilliant mechanical mind. J.R. loved fly fishing, golf and playing guitar. Above all else, he loved his family. J.R. leaves behind his high school sweetheart, best friend and wife, Karen (Smith) Whatley of 34 years; his daughter, Madison Whatley Lewis, her husband, Kyle Lewis and grandson, Tyler Lewis; and his son, Jake Whatley, all from Albuquerque. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Whatley, St. Louis; brother, Paul Whatley, and sister-in-law, Beverly Whatley of Albuquerque. J.R.'s two nieces, six nephews and seven grand-nieces and nephews will forever miss their Uncle Jay. He has gone to join his baby son, Beau Whatley; brothers, Garrett Whatley, Don Whatley; father, James Whatley; and beloved mother, Beverly G. Garcia. Make 'em laugh Jay. STOUT, MARCELLA (MARCIE) Marcie went to be with the Lord, Jesus while visiting her son in Vinita, OK on January 30, 2014; she was 71. Marcie was born to Everett and Alice Hein on September 25, 1942 in St. Joseph, MI. A gifted nurse, she worked for over 20 years in the Intensive and Coronary Care Units at Lovelace Medical Center and then later at both Presbyterian and UNMH where countless people were blessed by her expertise, but more importantly her kindness, mercy and compassion as she cared for them with the utmost concern for their comfort and dignity. She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett Hein and Alice Griffith; her son Gregory Stout and her niece Lisa Hein. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Eva and John Wilson of Anchorage, AK, son David Stout of Vinita, OK; brother, Harold Hein of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Thomas McAlister, Seth Wilson and Rachel Wilson of Anchorage, AK, Joseph McAlister of Loveland, CO and Marcus Avallone, Amanda Stout and Hannah Stout of Albuquerque; as well as nine great- grandchildren and three nephews. SENA, ALVINA Age 90, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home, Friday, January 31, 2014, while surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Winslow, AZ on April 16, 1923 and was a resident of Bernalillo, NM. Alvina's hobbies were sewing, cooking, and caring for her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cenobio and Beatrice Madrid; her husband, Sam J. Sena, Sr.; sons, Philip, Gregory and Raymond Sena; and grandsons, Josh Lovato and Luis Sena, Jr. Alvina is survived by her loving children, Sam, Jr., Dolores Gutierrez and husband Eddie, Luis Sena and wife Ina, Mary Bonnesen and husband Scott, Geraldine Loavto and husband David, Anthony Sena and Kathy, Vincent Sena, and Margaret Madrid; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and other numerous relatives and friends. Alvina will be greatly missed by her loving family and by those whose hearts she touched. SEGURA, SUSAN Susan Segura, mother to Cindy Segura and Gene Segura (Brenda); grandmother to Andrew Segura, Dell Howard, and Jacob Sanchez; great-grandmother to Dominic and Joshua Segura; sister to Sophie Tracy, Sharon Gentry-LIkovic (Lou), and Frank Gentry (Claire); died peacefully in the arms of her loving family on January 8, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband Domingo J. Segura in 2010. She is survived by many nieces and nephews including her special nieces, "her girls" Ellyse and July Gentry and other family members. In 1953 Domingo and Susan united in marriage. Marjorie was a beautiful wife and mother. She gave so much to so many, and always with love and kindness. She spent her life in the service of others and her church She will be missed by all that knew her. She gave us the courage to try anything and not give up. RITCHIE, JAMES C. Jim Ritchie passed away February 3, 2014, following an illness. He was a beloved and cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, brother, friend and mentor. Jim was born on July 29, 1927, in Lexington, OH. He served two years in the Navy before enrolling at UNM. He earned a business degree from UNM and a law degree from the UNM School of Law. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. While at UNM, he met Margaret Jean "Peggy" Sweeney. They were married for over fifty years before her death in 2004. Jim was a highly respected trial attorney, practicing for over fifty years with the Rodey Law Firm in Albuquerque. He was known for his skill, integrity, honesty and sense of humor. He mentored numerous young lawyers, teaching them not only legal skills, but life skills. Jim loved to golf, fish and cheer on the Lobos, but his true joy came from time spent with and supporting his family. Jim is survived by: his children, Charles (Patricia), Chris (Susan), Carol Ish (Mark), Cathy Reardon (Tim); his 10 grandchildren, Luke (Tarrah), Jacob (Kelli), and Nathan Ritchie; Eric and Scott Ritchie; Travis, Casey and Catie Ish; Kelly and Erin Reardon; five great-grandchildren; his brother William Ritchie (Betty) and sister Carolyn Sue Wilson; many nieces and nephews; and his loving companion Maxine Cowton. PURDY, JAMES G. Born in Roanoke, VA in 1934, into a family of eight boys and 2 girls who in 1949 moved to Albuquerque after their father died. Jerry attended St. Mary high school and received a degree from the University of Albuquerque in Business Management. After serving in the army during the Korean War period, he joined ACF Industries, where he began as a general factory employee and after ten years worked his way up to Senior Quality engineer. Jerry then transferred to Dow Chemical Co. He joined GE Aircraft Engine Co. in 1968 as a quality supervisor and rose to the position of Manager of Manufacturing. He spent 20 years with GE at the Albuquerque plant, then located at Woodward Road, before moving to Puerto Rico with GE Lighting Division as General Manager of Wiring Devices. He managed 2 manufacturing factories in Puerto Rico and later built another factory in the Dominican Republic. He was given an award by the Dominican Republic for securing and donating a fire truck to the town of Haina where most of his factory workers lived. He was also responsible for the later donation of x-ray equipment from GE to a major hospital in Santo Domingo. After seven years in Ponce, Puerto Rico he decided to retire back in Albuquerque with his wife Esther and to be close to their six children and 12 grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: parents John Thomas Purdy, Christine A. McCarty Purdy, brothers George, Joe, Pat, Walter, and sister Mary Jane Purdy. Jerry is survived by: wife Esther of 54 years; Darlene Salazar and husband Mark, Di-ana Rael and husband Francis D., Rudy Purdy, Denise Aiken and husband Bruce, James T. Purdy, Doreen Spahr and husband Russell; 12 grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and beloved pet Goldie. ORONA, WILLIE Age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 with his family by his side. He is survived by four siblings, Valentin Orona and wife, Mary Jane of Fresno, CA, Lillian Romero of Tome, NM, Pat Montes and husband, Ralph of Los Lunas, NM and Dorothy Godley and husband John of Springfield, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Modesta Orona; brother, Oswald Orona; brother-in-law, Juan Romero; nieces, Theresa Romero and Carol Armendariz; and nephew, David Orona. Willie served honorably as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Reserve during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion, The Cattle Growers Association, and The Wool Growers Association. He retired from the Railroad after 25 years of service. Willie was a prominent rancher and farmer in Bingham, NM and Las Nutrias, NM where he earned the title of Chile King by his family. He ran his business up until the day he went to be with the Lord. He was a very generous and giving brother, uncle and friend. A Mass will be celebrated Saturday, February 8, 2014, 9:00 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Parish, 7 Church Loop, Tome, NM. MILLER, ALFRED Age 89, beloved spouse, father, and friend, went to his heavenly father Tuesday January 28, 2014. He was a Merchant Marine WWII Veteran active in both theaters of the Pacific and the Atlantic till 1946. Commissioned in the Army Reserves he taught general staff courses for 25 years and retired with commendations as a Full Colonel. During this time he also was a Defense Security Specialist with the Government, AEC. He then became a staff writer for 3 Wolfe Publishing sporting magazines, achieving Assisting Editor and Editor. Alfred was an avid hunter with a great sense of humor who instilled in his children a deep love of the outdoors. He is survived by wife, Elizabeth J. Miller, his spouse of 61 years of Albuquerque, NM; son, Christopher Miller of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Nicole (Richard) Castellese of Albuquerque, NM; granddaughter, Candace (Colt) Stout of Bosque Farms, NM; granddaughter, Christen Miller of Canyon, TX. LEYENDECKER, WILLIAM EUGENE It is with great sadness that the family of William Eugene (Gene) Leyendecker announces his passing after a brief illness on January 31, 2014, at the age of 68 years. Gene will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Kathie, and their two children, Stephanie (Richard) Salazar of Castle Rock, Colorado and CJ (Tiffani) Leyendecker of LaGrange, Kentucky. Gene will also be fondly remembered by his two precious granddaughters Zoe Kathleen Salazar and Mackenzie Grace Leyendecker; by his mother Hivana; by his brother Albert (Ann) Leyendecker; his twin brother Jerry (Gwenda) Leyendecker; his sister Karen Padgett and their families. Gene was predeceased by his father Philip Leyendecker. Gene was born in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma on February 11, 1945 where his father was serving in the U.S. Army. They moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico where Gene attended school and earned a BS degree in Civil Engineering from NMSU in 1969 and a MS degree in Water/Wastewater Engineering in 1973. Gene's first engineering job was in Los Angeles, California working for the County Sanitation District. After two years, he moved back to his beloved New Mexico and settled in Albuquerque. Over the next 43 years, he worked for himself, private consultants, PNM, and the City of Santa Fe in water and wastewater management and design. Gene was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, and was an usher at the 10 o'clock Mass for many years. He was a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus serving three terms as Grand Knight and was a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly. Gene will be remembered for his love of life, his generosity, his kindness and his sense of adventure. He was an airplane pilot, a sponsor of Little League teams, timer of swim meets, maker of kites, and judge of science fairs. He loved being on or near the water, and sailing was one of his favorite pastimes. He was a voracious reader of all things historical,loved to play chess, loved to travel, and loved spending time with his grandchildren flying kites, fishing, and reading them Dr. Seuss books. He was the NMSU Aggies most loyal fan even in the hard times. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. Rosary will be recited on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lomas and Tennessee with Deacon Jack Granato Reciting. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church with Fr. Edward Domme, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Albert Leyendecker, Jerry Leyendecker, C. J. Leyendecker, Albert E. Leyendecker, Richard Salazar, and Chet Markham, Rick Hobson and Gil Gallegos. KOPPENHAVER, DONALD NORMAN Donald passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, February 2, 2014. He was born on February 27, 1935 to Adele and Glen Koppenhaver in San Pedro, CA. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary of Los Lunas; daughter, Rebecca (Anthony) of Los Angeles; two grandchildren, Max and Milo; daughter, Daneen; and son, Craig, both of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Guy Miller. Following his graduation from San Diego State University, Don joined the Air Force and for the next 21 years served his country, spending one year at Phan Rang Air Force Base in Vietnam. Upon his military retirement, he completed a Masters' degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked at Honeywell Defense Avionics until his retirement in 2000. He was a supreme craftsman, avid reader of scientific writings, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. HUMPHREY, GEORGE WILLIS age 85, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2014. He was born on November 16, 1928 in Georgetown Ohio. His family moved to New Mexico in 1944. On March 3, 1950 he married Anna Joyce Rigsby and was preceded by her death after 58 years of marriage. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by three sons, Gary Humphrey, Randy Humphrey, Rick Humphrey; one daughter Janet Bittle; five grandchildren, Alissa Macias, Jessica Humphrey, Daniel Humphrey, Rachel Humphrey, Aubriana Richardson; and one great- grandchild, Olivia Sexton. He leaves behind a legacy of humble kindness, always doing the right thing. Our hearts are heavy but out spirits are lifted knowing that he lived a long full life and his influence will forever be in our memories. She is survived by son, Michael Hill; mother, Annie Hill; brothers, Raymond Hill, Rodney Hill and Jonathan Hill; sister, Melba Fontaine and husband, Emmanuel; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Wanda was preceded in death by her father, Joe Hill; and brother, Jason Hill. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was an educational aide at LBJ Middle School and she dedicated her adult life to caring for children both in the classroom and coaching basketball.
