Obituary for SMITH

SMITH, WILLIAM F. On Christmas night, 2013, William "Bill" Smith, cherished husband, father, and granddad, joined his dear wife Marcie, son Jay, and granddaughter Amber in eternal rest. This remarkably generous family man, was a devotee of the outdoors and blessed his family with countless camping trips to such wonders as Yellowstone, Chaco Canyon, Gila, Grand Canyon, Jemez, San Simeon and Redwood National Forest, just to name a few. William, or Bill, as he preferred to be called, devoted his career to the Albuquerque Journal as their News Editor. "Smitty" as he was affectionately referred to by his colleagues at the Journal, had many fond memories of his years in the news business. A native of New York city, Bill started his career, as a photo journalist, at the New York Herald Tribune. Soon after they married, Bill and wife Marcie moved to Gallup, New Mexico, where Bill joined the staff as their Editor in Chief. Bill and Marcie fell in love with New Mexico and remained for the rest of their lives. After several years in Gallup, Bill was hired on at the Albuquerque Journal as their copy editor, promoted to News Editor, and spent the rest of his career with the Journal. Bill wrote a daily front page piece, for the Albuquerque Journal, called "Good Morning", which shared his witty insights regarding the days events. Bill was a devoted husband, father, and granddad. Friends from childhood, John and Eileen Lewin, of Paradise Hills, also moved from New York to New Mexico and remained dear friends of Bill and Marcie, standing strong and staying close through the years. Although sadness grips the hearts of those who will miss Bill (Dad), we are inspired by his insightful humor, his generosity, and his strength of character through the hardships he has endured. Bill is survived by his youngest son, Guy.
