PADILLA, LAURA KATHLEEN PH.D. May 26, 1974 - March 16, 2014 Laura Kathleen Padilla of Colorado Springs passed away on March 16, 2014 after living with breast cancer for eleven years. A literary scholar, she received her BA in English from Reed College, her MA from Penn State University and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Austin with Jose Limon, Ph.D. serving as her major professor. She wrote about the literature of her native New Mexico with penetrating insight, unsparing honesty and trenchant wit. Her students at Colorado College, where she was an assistant professor, remember her as a thoughtful and demanding teacher. She is survived by her husband, Peter Haney, of Lawrence, Kansas and Colorado Springs, her in-laws, Carlena and Barney Haney; her brother-in-law, Jake Haney and spouse, Kristy Kaiser, of Dayton, Ohio and Haney relatives who came to love Laura as one of their own. She is also survived by her parents, Kathleen and Eligio R. Padilla; her sisters - twin sister, Sara Padilla, who devoted herself to Laura's care throughout her struggle, especially the last two months, Amy Padilla; nieces, Mariyah and Myranda Waits and grand-nephew, Rayden Waits of Richmond, Virginia, Lisa Padilla Eaton; brother-in-law, Stephen Eaton and nephews, Alex, Aaron and Asher Eaton and Alison Rosner-Alison, all of Albuquerque. She is survived by a much larger extended family that has been in New Mexico for centuries in Alameda and Bernalillo and involved in the Atrisco and Carnue land grants, including aunt Dolores and uncle Carlos Duran, aunt Rose and uncle Frank Ortiz, aunt Loretta and uncle Ron McMath, uncle Eddie Padilla and aunt Doreen Ramirez, uncle Danny Padilla and aunt Irene Herrera and aunt Jan Vuchetich and husband Paul, as well as many beloved cousins. She is survived by a branch of her family that migrated to the United States from Chihuahua and Durango and settled in El Paso, Texas, including her maternal grandfather, Vicente Arroyo and wife Lee, aunt Sylvia and uncle Rudy Nolasco, aunt Carmen and uncle Rick Trujillo, aunt Aileen, uncle Vincent and aunt Ruby Arroyo of Santa Teresa, uncle Bill and aunt Joyce Arroyo, uncle Andrew Arroyo of San Diego, California, Stephany and husband Jeff Jones, Craig and Martha Arroyo and Christopher and Sarah Johnson-Arroyo. Her surviving grandaunt, Ofelia Arroyo, and her mother's cousins in El Paso always warmly welcome the Padillas into their homes. Bobby and Lolita Natividad and children helped Laura and her family cope with homesickness when they lived in Los Angeles. She is also survived by several friends from her days at Reed, including Rachel Ihara, Lorelei Russ, Miranda Pearce, Kim Roche and Kartini Thomas, and her Sisterhood of Tejana Troublemakers, whom she loved dearly and who now teach at colleges and universities all over the country. Virginia Raymond, husband Tom Kolker and children Joey, Rebecca and Louis, embraced Laura and Pete, made the Padillas part of their family and provided a place to stay for her mother when Laura began treatment. Her roommate, Margarita Marinova, and later her husband, Enrico Rossi and children Eleanor and Isabel became part of the Padilla family and the voluntary kinship was reciprocated. The Padillas were warmly received by the Marinovs of Vratsa, Bulgaria and the Rossis of Trofarelo, Italy. Visiting with Margarita and Enrico's families in Bulgaria and Italy and celebrating Eleanor's first birthday in Italy is a treasured memory for all of the Padillas. Laura was preceded in death by her grandmother, Alice Arroyo, her great grandmother, Maria del Refugio Hernandez de Hernandez (Gramma Cuca), her Nana and Tata, Josefita Sanchez and Eligio J. Padilla and uncles Conrad and Joe Mel Padilla. CHAVEZ, JOSE D. Age 92, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 16, 2014. He was born in Cuba, NM and was a resident of Bernalillo, NM. Jose served in Italy during World War II where he received a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and taking car of animals. Jose will be fondly remembered by his terrific sense of humor and his love for telling stories. He was preceded in death by his in death by his parents, Santiago Chavez and Dolores Sandoval; brothers, Genaro Chavez, Alfredo, Abel, and Jose Manuel Sandoval; an sister, Guadalupe Carrillo. BOWERS, MELISSA K. Melissa K. Bowers, age 44, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2014 after a long illness with her loving family by her side. Melissa was a life long resident of Albuquerque. Melissa most recently worked for Direct Buy. She was known as a super sales person. Several times she ranked as the top, or near the top, sales person in the nation for that company. More important to Melissa was her relationship with her God, Jehovah. Everyone who came into contact with her soon found that out. She loved to share her hope in God's Kingdom with everyone she met. Melissa was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1984 and served her God faithfully right up to her last breath. She was preceded in death by her siblings Kimberly and Matthew Bowers. Melissa is survived by her parents Ron & Karin Bowers; Larry Mills; grandmother Thea Gallegos; brother Kenneth Bowers, his wife Courtney; brothers Patrick Bowers and Adrian Mills; niece Elizabeth Chavez; nephew Timothy Bowers; uncle Bob Bowers; Marian Davis, her husband Henry; Jasmine Briggs, her husband Rocky; many loving cousins and countless special friends. BACA, JENNIFER R. age 35, passed away March 17,2014, with her family beside her. Her strength and perseverance during her battle with an extremely rare and aggressive cancer was admired by all. Jennifer devoted her life to her family and her students. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of hundreds of children and families in her career as a teacher. Her sweetness, caring, understanding, and patience attributed to her being a wonderful mother and person. Jennifer touched everyone that knew her. She is survived by two loving, beautiful children, Kaleah, age 13 and Attyana, age 6; her mother, Carolyn Aragon; father, Michael G. ARRELLIN, JOE 
Joe L. Arrellin, 70, of Albuquerque, went home to his Heavenly Father on Monday, March 17, 2014. He was born on 25 November 1943 to Atanacio and Frances Arrellin. He married the love of his life Maria Arrellin on June 20 1963. Joe was a Vietnam Veteran and worked in retail for 26 years. He is survived by his wife Maria; his brother Anselmo; his six kids: Lisa, Joe, Rita, Phillip, Veronica and Ramona; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A viewing will be held at Riverside Funeral Home at 6 pm on Thursday with Rosary to follow. ANZURES, M. EVELYN Evelyn went to be with the Lord on March 10, 2014. She was 62 years old. She is preceded in death by her grandparents: Pantaleon & wife Inez Sanchez; parents: Ralph and Della Anzures; and godson, Jimmy Martinez. Evelyn is survived by her brothers: Ralph and wife Marcella Anzures, and Lionel Anzures; sister, Theresa Martinez; two godsons: Jimmy Martinez and Cristobal Martinez and fiancee Stephanie Lopez; and many nieces and nephews. STOVALL, DORIS HAZEL (LOEWEN) Jan 28, 1928 - Jan 29, 2014 Doris went home to be with Jesus on January 29, 2014. She was born January 28, 1928 to Reuben and Cecil (Hamm) Loewen in Dalhart, TX. Doris fell in love with and married a cute Army Air Corps Captain named Virgil Stovall in 1946. They lived in Dalhart, TX where they had two children and then moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1956. Doris loved the Lord, her family and bowling. She was married for 56 wonderful years. They lived in Albuquerque until the death of her husband in 2002 and then she moved to Alamogordo in 2003 to be with her son and his family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reuben and Cecil; infant grandson, Sean David Stovall; husband, Virgil; brother, Herman (Sonny). Doris is survived by daughter, Janie Powell and her husband Lu Powell and their two daughters, Kim Kupec and her husband, Tom Kupec; Michele Thomas and her husband Brian; son Mickey Stovall and his wife Sonya Stovall and their two sons, Joshua Stovall and Douglas Stovall; her sister Vennie Munsell. MOZE, TRUDY MARIE (BROWN) Age 80, passed away on March 15, 2014 while undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer. Trudy was born October 18, 1933 in Chicago, Ill. She moved to Albuquerque with her extended family while in the sixth grade and graduated from Albuquerque High in 1951. She attended UNM, joined Pi Beta Phi, and met Elliott Mozee the following year. Soon she became an Air Force bride. In 1955 the couple moved to California to begin what was to be a 35 year sojourn. Trudy completed her degree at U.C. Santa Cruz and enjoyed working as a travel agent for a number of years. They moved back to New Mexico in 1990 as retirees. Trudy had a talent for interior decoration and over six decades employed this talent on their twelve homes in California, Florida and New Mexico (Taos, Corrales and Albuquerque). She made many, many good friends easily. To know her was to love her. Survivors include her husband; son, Ben (Laurie) Akron, NY; son, Brad (Gaby) Orinda, CA; and daughter Janine (David) Davis, CA. A daughter Gayle died in 2010. Also surviving are ten grandchildren. Others include her brother, Fred Johnson (Shirley); uncle Wentworth Brown; and cousin Doug Carter (Betty Jo), all of Albuquerque. Cremation services were handled by the Neptune Society. A memorial service will be arranged in the near future.
HILL, THOMAS PAUL Died after a long battle with cancer March 14, 2014. Tom was born January 22, 1951 in Albuquerque to Leon and Marge Hill, who moved to Santa Fe in 1954. Tom was active in Boy Scouts and enjoyed the Pecos Wilderness. He graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1968 going on to Alvin Junior College in Alvin, Texas and then completed his college education with a degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in Texas. He was commissioned a Police Officer in 1975 with the Santa Fe Police Department and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He retired in 1999 and was then commissioned a Santa Fe County Deputy Sheriff where he served until 2007. Tom was active in the Fraternal Order of Police where he served on the Board of Directors and as President. He is preceded in death by his father, Leon and mother, Marge and his sister Gail Hill-Freeman. He is survived by his sister, Margaret and his brother, Robert as well as his nieces and nephews, Leon Young, Nicole Young, Andrea Young, Margareta Young and Charlene Young-Cisneros, great nieces, Emma and Abigail Cisneros of Albuquerque, Katherine Hill and Justin Hill of Carmel, Indiana. Tom enjoyed the outdoors and travel with his significant other, Elizabeth Adams, traveling around the country to visit his adopted nieces and Julie Maas, Christie Souslby, Tammy Utsler, Michelle Fox, and adopted grandson Bryan Pickens and family. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fraternal Order of Police in Santa Fe, 3300 Calle Maria Luisa, Santa Fe, NM. HANNA, MADELINE LOUISE Madeline L. Hanna, born in Whitehall, WI, passed away in Charlotte, NC on March 12 after a valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Dr. Erin Hanna Baker, and son-in-law, Sam Baker of Charlotte, NC; her mother, Adeline Blundy; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Pete Groves; and niece and nephew, Jeanie and Adam Wynn of Phoenix, AZ. She was preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack). Madeline was a proud graduate of Arizona State University where she received both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She moved to El Paso in 1978 and began teaching Home Economics at Riverside High School. She was a dedicated teacher, always pushing her students to work harder and to be successful. She was instrumental in the organization of the Teen Parenting Academy in the Ysleta Independent School District and did everything in her power to motivate teen parents to stay in school and graduate. After retiring from the YISD, Madeline relocated to Albuquerque and began teaching at Independence High School where she continued her work with at-risk teens. She epitomized professionalism and always strove to be a better teacher. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi sorority and participated in many community service activities throughout her life. She loved to do counted cross-stitch and created many beautiful pieces of stitching over the years. Attending sorority events and going to stitching camp were highlights of her life. She leaves behind many friends, former students, colleagues, and her loving family who will miss her greatly. HANKS, EUGENE RALPH 
Eugene Ralph Hanks, CAPT U.S. Navy Retired, WWII fighter pilot Ace, jet test pilot, Blue Angel, "Top-Gun" squadron commander, mountain land developer and resident of Mora, NM, died peacefully in Albuquerque on March 13, 2014, at the age of 95. Born in Corning, CA, Dec. 11, 1918, He attended Red Bluff H.S. in Red Bluff, CA, and California Polytechnic State College San Luis Obispo before joining the U.S. Navy in Oct. 1941. He completed flight training and received his wings and commission in Aug. 1942. CAPT Hanks served 28 years in the U.S. Navy through several wars earning the Navy Cross, two Distinguished flying Crosses, seven Air Medals, the Legion of Merit, and various other medals and citations. He served as Commanding Officer (CO) of three jet fighter squadrons, including being the first CO of the famous "Top-Gun" squadron. During WWII in the Pacific near Tarawa Island in Nov. 1944, he became the first Navy Hellcat pilot to become an "ace" in a day by shooting down five enemy planes in the first five minutes of his first aerial combat, a feat few, if any, fighter pilots have accomplished. After WWII, he was a test pilot at Patuxent River Naval Test Center in Maryland, testing the Navy's first jet planes when they simply said, "Get in and fly." In 1950, he was a member of the Blue Angels, the Navy's aerial demonstration team, flying the Panther jet. Hanks was also the CO of the Navy's first jet training squadron of select pilots; a member of the first operational jet squadron on the West Coast; a pilot testing the Navy's first jet fighters to use air-to-air missiles; the CO of the first squadron with jet fighters with missiles; the CO of the first military unit to have the F-4 Phantom II fighter jet, the fastest operational fighter in service at the time; the first operations officer on the new USS Constellation, the largest conventional aircraft carrier at that time; the director of Aerospace and directorate operations at the Naval Missile Center; and the test director and the naval representative to a joint military task force. While living in New Mexico, he acquired land around the Mora Valley and developed Christmas Tree Canyon Ranch and mountain cabin properties, where he lived for more than 40 years. In various who's who publications, he characterized himself as a "land developer, cattle rancher, [forester, and] retired naval officer." He was married for 58 years to Frances Elliot Herrick of Philadelphia until her death in 2002. He is survived by his three sons Herrick of Watsonville, CA, Russell of St. George, UT, and Stephen of Albuquerque, NM; and daughter Nina of Albuquerque, NM; as well as 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. GOFF, ALICE D. 88 1/2 years young, passed away Sunday, March 16th, 2014 with her daughter by her side. She is survived by daughter, Debbie Benninghoff; her son-in-law, Robert; and grandchild, Jamie of Albuquerque. Mrs. Goff is also survived by her sister in law, Patricia Beaton; niece, Nicola Straw and husband James and their four children; nephew, Gary Beaton all of Great Britain and numerous relatives in Vienna, Austria. Mrs. Goff was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie in 2007; son, James in 1978, and her brother, Ernest in 1986. Mrs. Goff was born in Vienna, Austria and spent her teenage years in England. After WWII, she moved to West Germany where she met and married Charlie, an American civilian who had served in the US Army during the war. After their marriage in 1949, they moved to England where Charlie worked for the Department of Defense. Charlie's job took them to England, France and back to Germany. The family moved to Albuquerque in 1986. Being a firm believer in philanthropic work, Mrs. Goff was an active member of Assistance League of Albuquerque. She was an avid bridge player and attained the rank of bronze life master. A Memorial Celebration of her Life will be held this Saturday, March 22, 2014, 3:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas with a reception to follow. Interment will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Tuesday, the 25th of March at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to: Assistance League of Albuquerque, Amnesty International, Doctors without Borders and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Stephen (Steve) Thomas Garcia, 60, of Bozeman, MT, and an Albuquerque native, passed away Feb. 4, 2014. A memorial service for his family and many Albuquerque friends will be held March 22, 9:30 a.m. at the University of New Mexico Alumni Memorial Chapel. CHAVEZ, JOSE D. Age 92, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 16, 2014. He was born in Cuba, NM and was a resident of Bernalillo, NM. Jose served in Italy during World War II where he received a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and taking care of animals. Jose will be fondly remembered by his terrific sense of humor and his love for telling stories. He was preceded in death by his in death by his parents, Santiago Chavez and Dolores Sandoval; brothers, Genaro Chavez, Alfredo, Abel, and Jose Manuel Sandoval; an sister, Guadalupe Carrillo. Jose is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Mary Lou Chavez; his children, Deluvina Casias, Eliseo Chavez and wife Gloria, Joe Chavez, and Sharon Gonzales and husband Miguel; numerous grandchildren; his sister, Evan Gutierrez; and his four legged companion, Chiquita. Jose will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those whose lives he touched. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. also at the Church. Interment will be Monday, March 24, 2014 at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m. Pallbearers will be Abel Sandoval, Ray Casias, Servando Perez, Reyes Perez, Joe Arellano, Douglas Largent, Eddie Molinar, and Gilbert Aragon.
