Obituary for DANEMANN

DANEMANN, HERSHEL A., M.D. beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and (retired) physician, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, March 10, 2013. Hershel was born in Kansas, City, Missouri on December 13, 1928 to Isaac and Sara Danemann. He spent much of his youth working alongside his father in their neighborhood grocery store. He went on to attend both the Universities of Missouri and Kansas Schools of Medicine, graduating in 1953. Hershel then moved to Chicago, Illinois in order to complete his internship at Michael Reese Hospital. Following completion of his internship he fulfilled his commitment to the United States Air Force by serving three years as a flight surgeon, stationed in Big Springs, Texas. In 1956, while stationed in Big Springs, Texas, Hershel met and married Joan Provus. They returned to Chicago, where Hershel completed his residency at both Michael Reese and Northwestern Hospitals. Originally, Hershel was focused on cardiology as a specialty and was accepted as a resident in cardiology at Michael Reese Hospital where he served as Chief Resident. Hershel eventually found the technical part of gastroenterology interesting and chose that as his medical practice specialty. In 1960, Joan and Hershel moved to Albuquerque where Hershel began the practice of medicine. He worked for two years running the Santa Fe Railroad Hospital before deciding to pursue private practice. Hershel was a well-known and respected gastroenterologist in private practice for over 40 years. He was also known as the "go to" for EKG readings and interpretation due to his experience in cardiology while at Michael Reese Hospital. Hershel had a very successful private practice and was given the Hugh A. Cooper award for Excellence in Medicine in 2004 by Presbyterian Healthcare Services. He was passionate about medicine and loved both his patients and being a part of the medical community. After retiring it was not unusual to find Hershel in the doctor's lounge at Presbyterian Hospital - hanging out with his colleagues and "talking shop". He had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and though dogmatic about practicing good medicine, could also bring a smile to the faces of all he touched. Hershel will be remembered as a caring, compassionate, patient-advocate who knew when it was time to get out of medicine. Hershel adored his wife and children and was proud of all their accomplishments. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan; sister, Rose Daneman; his four children: Sandra Abruzzo and husband, Benny, Susie MacLean and husband, Tom, Mark Danemann and David Danemann; seven grandchildren, Benjamin and Dane Abruzzo, Harrison Neff and Tristan MacLean, Jake, Roland and Seth Danemann; and two great-grandchildren. Hershel's children would like to honor and commend their mother for her commitment to keeping their father at home as he battled Parkinson's disease and dementia in the latter part of his life. The family would also like to extend their sincere appreciation to his loving, compassionate caregivers, Fermine Cervantes and Graciella Reyes for their tireless dedication to his comfort and well-being. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Hershel's honor to Animal Humane of New Mexico, 615 Virginia Street SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, or a charity of your choosing. A celebration of his life will take place at the family home on Wednesday, March 13th from 3:00 - 6:00p.m. Please visit www.danielsfuneral.com to view information or to leave your condolences.

PEREA, FELIPE 1/7/50 - 3/14/10 LOVE ETERNAL Under a burst of starlight We held a piece of star that burned our hands And marked the fates, eternally knowing We would always beyou and I. A pregnant rose ripe with its perfumed scent Opened and filled the twilight, And as the wind caresses the trees and tangles itself Within sharp pines and soft jade leaveswe loved, Two trees side by side, Both bending in the strong winds, Our soft shadows sheltering each other. However, like a voyager, from being to nothingness, You left me to travel the unknown--far away In the silent membrane of alternate consciousness, Whose horizons now hide you from me. Beloved, you are now part of the night Dark, silent, and secluded, And I am left on the shore of my mourning With only my memories and eternal love Lapping at the barren shore in winter's wind. --R. A. Perea 2013
