  • PENDLETON, RALPH EDWARD SR. loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, veteran of World War II, businessman and friend of many, passed away on May 24, 2014 in Raton, New Mexico at nearly 90 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Alexander Pendleton and Eula Hanna Pendleton and by his wife of nearly 40 years, Bobbie Ruth Hilliard Pendleton. Ralph was born in Roy, New Mexico in 1924 and after graduating from Roy High School attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque at a time in that city's early history when he described the campus as "sitting all by itself in the desert above the valley town." During these formative years, Ralph was a musician, part of the honor society, a fraternity member and an accomplished athlete, playing baseball for the New Mexico Lobos college team. After graduating college with a degree in Geology, and with the world at war in the mid 1940s, Ralph joined the Navy and completed flight training in Corpus Christi, Texas where he was awarded his pilot wings. Around this time, he wed the love of his life, Bobbie Ruth Hilliard, and together they commenced a marriage and life journey as a military family. The couple borne three sons and traveled to various military bases over the course of his Navy career including Washington DC, Virginia, Morocco Africa, Nebraska and Honolulu, Hawaii. His service duties included those of a Naval Aviator, a Strategic Air Command European Intelligence Representative and a joint staff officer for the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He attained the rank of Lt. Commander during his 26 year military service. Ralph remained in Hawaii after his retirement from the Navy, during which time he taught mathematics at a local intermediate high school. Soon thereafter in 1969 he returned to Raton, New Mexico with his family in tow and began working for the family business, Pendleton Oil and Gas Company. He worked throughout business locations in northern New Mexico as a managing officer of the company well into his 80s. Ralph is survived by elder sister Jean Pendleton Filkins; by his sons Ralph Jr., Matthew and Ned; five grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; as well as numerous other family relations. Thanks go out for the kind care Ralph received during his stay at Colfax Senior Care Assisted Living and also for the services provided by Sangre De Cristo Hospice. During his lifetime, Ralph was a benefactor to a number of charitable organizations and a supporter of health industry causes including March of Dimes, Alzheimer's Association and the American Cancer Foundation. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the surviving family requests that donations be made to these and other organizations of choice. A memorial service is planned for June 6, 2014 at the Yaksich - Long Funeral Home in Raton located at 1310 South Second Street at 11:00 am that morning.
