HODO, FANNIE MILDREW (CHAFFIN) Age 104, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2014. Mildrew was born May 9, 1910 in Nacogdoches, TX to David and Lena Chaffin; seven brothers soon followed. She married S.D. Hodo on December 23, 1928. A young wife and mother during the Great Depression, she and her family survived by sharecropping throughout West Texas before moving to Clovis, NM in 1939. In 1949, she, her husband and son moved to Albuquerque where they owned Royal Cleaners until the early 1970s. Mildrew is survived by her son, Bobby Dee Hodo; grandchildren, Jill Bean, Tim Hodo and Holly Kurz. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. COSTALES, NESTOR Age 85, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2014. He is survived by his precious wife of 61 years, Rosa; daughter, Rebecca Phillips and husband Larry; son, Randy Costales and wife Bertha and daughter, Sharon Samuelson and husband Mark; granddaughters, Amanda Rose Kuehne and husband Darren, Mikayla Estrella Costales, Gabrielle Samuelson, Monica Rodriguez and husband Nathan, Jessica McDevitt and husband Aaron, and Ravae Tenorio; great grandchildren Alex Griego, Brodey McDevitt, and Harley Tenorio; brothers Joe Costales and wife Flora, Ernest Costales and wife Amy and sister Frances Tenorio and husband Robert; godchildren Cathy Costales and Marlene Kravitz and many special nieces and nephews, and special friend Kathy Ferguson and granddaughter Krystal. Nestor was preceded in death by his parents Jose Maria and Sofia Costales and brother Alonzo Costales. Nestor was a gentle, humble, caring and loving man who was happiest when with his family. He enjoyed good company, good food and a good laugh. He was always willing to help others. He was an active and lifelong member of El Buen Samaritano United Methodist Church where he served as Trustee and as a member of the choir - he loved to sing and he had a beautiful voice! The Costales Family would like to give a special thank you to the Tenorio Family for their constant love and devotion towards "Pa". CASTILLO, MARK B. Age 87, a resident of Torreon, NM passed peacefully at home on Friday, August 8, 2014 with his family at his side. He is survived by his children, Benita Castillo, Reginald Castillo and wife, Brenda, Karyn West and husband, James, Kathy Castillo, Leroy Castillo, Ruby Castillo, Paul Castillo and wife, Charlene, Annabelle Waites and husband, Martin, Isabelle Castillo, and Tynna Begay and husband, Stewart; 28 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Paddy Castillo, Sr.; niece, Rita Yazze; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen S. Castillo; son, Hank H. Castillo; granddaughter, Nizhoni Angel Castillo; brothers, Tony R. Castillo, Eddie Castillo Sr., and Billy Jack Castillo; and two sisters. Mark was born in 1927 in Whitehorse Lake, NM and as a young man worked at Wingate Army Depot as a driver and also as a seasonal farmer. He entered the United States Army and was stationed in Germany as a Medic for three years. After his discharge, he returned to Torreon where he married Helen Sandoval on April 15, 1953. He worked as a bus driver, a gas station attendant, mechanic and other jobs to support his family. They moved to Farmington in about 1979 where Mark was working for American Tank and Steel and then Navajo Mines/BHP, retiring after 33 years. Mark was also a cattle rancher in Rincon Marquez, NM. He took care of Helen until her death in 1997. Mark loved to travel, to read, and watch old Western movies. He was a humorous, hardworking, soft-spoken man "who could walk on water." There was always a smile on his face. Mark was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by all. Services will be held on Wednesday August 13, 2014, 11:30 a.m., at FRENCH - Wyoming. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Melvina Castillo, Craig Castillo, Freman Gauna, Lance Castillo, Tiffany Fragua, Jarion Antone, Myles Waites, and Kyle Castillo. She is survived by her sons, Richard Brandt and Larry Sterling Brandt; her nephew, David Flaig; nieces, Jill Healon, Carin Jones; and great-nephews, Archie and Andrew Healon, and Ted Flaig; and numerous friends. Mrs. Brandt was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Ralph Brandt; her father, Monroe Somers; her parents, Ralph and Pansy Pettit; and her sister, Margaret Kennedy. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir. Cathy pursued her childhood dream to become a Registered Nurse which became her life long career. She loved her family, friends, and her cat Callie Precious. Mrs. Brandt was a devoted wife and mother and was proud to be a life-long resident of the South Valley. BOATMUN, BILL NEWELL Bill Newell Boatmun A.K.A. Bill McIntosh Age 72, died at Stillwater Medical Center in Oklahoma on Saturday, August 9, 2014 after a brief illness. He leaves his beloved wife of 32 years, Wanda (Hogue) Boatmun. His benevolent heart, positive spirit and infectious humor touched the hearts of all who knew him. Bill was born October 24, 1942 in Oklahoma City. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1962, receiving a Good Conduct Medal in 1960 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He received a degree in Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1968. After graduation he moved to Albuquerque, NM and worked as an engineer for Sandia National Laboratories (1968-1997). After retirement he moved to Stillwater, OK to be closer to his children and grandchildren. On Wednesday, August 13, 2014, he will be laid to rest in the Combs/McIntosh Cemetery. Marcella is survived by her children, Antonette Roybal (John), Larry Archibeque (Monica), Georgia Kidwell (Bill); grandchildren, six; great-grandchildren, seven; sister, Delores Armijo (Cindy); numerous nieces, nephews and relatives, including many beloved friends. Marcella was a Caregiver to the elderly and a life long resident of Corrales. She was a devoted Catholic and served with the Catholic Daughters of America. TORRES, DOROTHY C. Dorothy C. (Kennedy Fincke) Torres passed away peacefully in Albuquerque on Saturday, August 9th, 2014, after a year long struggle with several medical complications. She was preceded in death by her parents John L. Kennedy and Thelma I. (Popejoy) Kennedy, and her brother John L. Kennedy Jr. Dorothy was born in Albuquerque, NM on December 24, 1936, and grew up in Santa Fe, NM as one of six children. Dorothy graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1955. She worked for Woolco for several years and retired from Creamland Diaries after 20 years. She is survived by her husband Richard Torres; her children Wayne Fincke, Kenneth Fincke, and Carolynn Fincke; her dog Teddy; siblings Donald Kennedy, Patricia Lappe (and husband Bryan), Richard Kennedy (and wife Nadine), and Shirley Kennedy; and several nieces and nephews. Special appreciation to sister-in-law Evelyn (Torres) Romero who opened her home to Dorothy and Richard over the last year. MUNOZ, JAIME Age 41, went to be with the Lord, his brother, father and son on August 10, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Feliz; son, Jaime; mom, Irma; mother-in-law, Sherry Vogel; brothers and sisters, Guillermo, Jorge, Laura, Miguel, Javier, Ruben, and Liz Munoz, and many nieces and nephews and loving sister-in-laws. Jaime was a strong member of the community and touched many lives in his short 41 years. Jaime graduated from Manzano HS in 1991 and made lasting friendships during his life. He was an amazing father, son, husband, brother, and friend though out his life's journey and he will be forever missed by his wife and children and extended family and friends. Jaime was a strong member of the Pulmonary Fibrosis community and promoted Organ Donor Awareness in the New Mexico and beyond. He strived to help others be able to feel his strength and love and insisted on reaching out to others even in his most difficult times. His family will ensure that his legacy of helping others lives on. LASCANO, STEVEN REY Steven Rey Lascano, born at the USAF Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany on March 12, 1973, went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2014 in Houston, TX. Steven is survived by his mother, Ona Ferrell and step-father John, of San Antonio, TX; father Edward Lascano and step-mother Connie; sister Amanda Crump and fiance Benjamin Lundquist; brother Anthony Lascano and companion Darlene Merla; and niece Natalie Lascano, all of Houston, TX; grandmothers Ora Correa and Edwina Lascano; and grandfather Hector Correa, of Albuquerque, NM; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. He is also survived by his step-mother Sylvana Franze of Patchogue, NY and many step-brothers and step-sisters. The Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 10:30 am at the San Antonio de las Huertas Heir Land Grant Cemetery, 1-37 Camino de la Buena Vista, Placitas, NM. Inurnment will follow the service. Steven's final wishes were to return to New Mexico. He will remain in the mountains for eternity as he wished. KROPP, ARTHUR J. JR. was born at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri on September 14, 1942 to Arthur J. Kropp, Sr. and Alice Marie Dornback Kropp. He passed away at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 10, 2014. Art lived a full life, having traveled the world as a child of a military family and during his own military service. After graduating from high school in Heidelberg, Germany, he was inducted into the Army by his father. He served as a Medic and a Physician's Assistant at Walter Reed Hospital in the early 1970's. Art was involved with the development and operation of an early heart-lung machine. After his military service, he worked as a Physician's Assistant for surgeons in Louisiana and Wisconsin. After retiring from medicine, Art worked for Tri Clover in Kenosha, Wisconsin until his retirement, when he moved to Albuquerque. Art enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, stamp and coin collecting. He was a proud member of the NRA and the American Legion. Most importantly, Art was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. The positive impact he had on those around him will not soon be forgotten. Arthur J. Kropp, Jr. is survived by his wife of 22 years Eve (LaCombe-Hamsing) Kropp. He is also survived by his brother Stephen Kropp; son Lee Kropp; daughter Jackie Kropp; daughter Jorie Gnoitcynski; son Michael Hamsing; and six grandchildren, Michael, Nicole, Rebecca, Corianne, John Arthur and Jody. JONES, MARY CATHERINE PLEDGER Age 81, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2014 with her family by her side. She is preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Jones; brothers, Richard Pledger and Don Pledger; sister, Bobbie Sue Daughtery; and her parents, Carl and Trilby Pledger. She is survived by her three children: daughter, Leslie Van Der Heide and husband Wim and their sons Alexander and Marco of The Netherlands, daughter, Carol Dickey and husband Bill and their children Kelly and Michael of Corrales, NM, and son, Brian Jones of Oakland, CA as well as many nieces and nephews. Catherine was born in Paris, AK in 1933. Her family moved to Carlsbad, NM in 1940 where she was raised. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1951. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor University in Belton, TX for two years, where she served as Vice President of her sophomore class and was a member of "The Choraliers" women's choir. She married J.D. Jones of Carlsbad, NM in 1953. They moved to Los Alamos in 1954 where they both worked for Zia Company. In 1957, they relocated permanently to Albuquerque when J.D. accepted a position at Sandia Labs. Catherine was a devoted and active member of St Andrew United Presbyterian Church since 1962, serving as a deacon, elder, member of the choir, and numerous committees. She was blessed with a loving family and many devoted friends. She will be remembered for her devotion to her church, passion for Albuquerque and New Mexico, appreciation of the arts, her beautiful soprano voice, meticulous flair for design, glamour, good taste and a strong sense of tradition. She was a caring and giving person who was blessed with charisma and beauty. She made a striking impression on everyone who met her, and earned the love and respect of everyone who knew her. JACQUES, MANUELITA &Quot;MOLLY&Quot; AMALIA Age 92, passed away peacefully Friday evening, August 8, 2014 at home surrounded by her immediate family. Molly was born January 1, 1922 to Agapita and Juan Cristobal Gomez in her grandmother's home in Dulce, NM and was raised at her family's ranch in Gobernador, NM. Molly was preceded in death by husband, Loney (1990); her parents; siblings, Gregorita Jaquez, Agapita Abeyta, Juan Cristobal Gomez II, Delfinita Chavez, Ruby Jacquez and Celso Gomez; and her grandson, Marcus Hopkins. She is survived by her daughters, Agapita (Pita) Hopkins and husband, Chris, Lucy Purtell and husband, Tim and Anita Endres and husband, Dan; grandchildren, Denae (Purtell) Armendariz and husband, Beto, Samuel Hopkins, Maria, Alejandro and Benjamin Endres; great-grandsons, Abrien and Isaiah Armendariz; sisters, Matilde Martinez, Genoveva Candelaria and Beatrice Rodriguez; and brother, Jose E. Gomez; numerous beloved nieces, nephews, godchildren and extended family and friends. As a child, Molly was nurtured in her Catholic faith which was further enhanced at Sacred Heart Academy in Waterflow, NM where she graduated in 1941. She was taught by the Ursulin nuns and developed a lifelong love and commitment to the Ursulin order. Molly attended nursing school in Denver, CO, but after dissecting a cadaver in anatomy class, decided to study education at Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM. She then taught school in Gobernador and was her youngest brother's (Celso) first grade teacher. She helped raise her seven younger siblings during her father's illness and after his death. During her professional career, she worked for Dr. Queary and at the San Juan County Court House in Aztec, NM. She married Loney in 1952 and followed him during his naval career throughout the US although her heart always remained in NM. They relocated to Albuquerque upon his retirement in 1961. Molly was a devoted parishioner of Holy Ghost Parish before becoming a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph on the Rio Grande in 2007. She loved attending daily Mass and was a fervent follower of St. Padre Pio. She volunteered in the ministries of the Rosary Altar Society, the Rosary Makers, and was a Eucharistic Minister for shut-ins. She was also a member of the Ladies Fleet Reserve Auxiliary, a Birthright Volunteer (interpreter) and as a surviving spouse she was a supporter of the Pearl Harbor Survivor Assoc. Everyone who encountered Molly fell in love with her. She always embraced each individual with tenderness, compassion and love and made everyone feel special. She welcomed all in her home and never sent anyone home empty handed. Her faithfulness to our Lord was an inspiration to all and we know she is now embraced in our Lord's loving arms. Always remember that Molly loves you 'more'. HYINK, JAMES LEE James Lee Hyink passed away on August 10th after a long history of heart disease. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; three children, Saundra Evers of Belton, MO, Kathy Harper of Albuquerque, Nona (Dallas) Van Slyke of Oregon, IL.; sister Jan Smith of Red Oak, IA; eight grandchildren; and 18 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sons-in-law Robert Evers and Robert Harper. Jim spent 20 years as an officer in the Army serving in the EOD and Special Forces. He served in Viet Nam. After retirement he taught history and political science courses at the university level. He was an avid University of Nebraska football fan, volunteer for the Friends of the Public Library, Atomic Museum, Veterans Memorial Park and contributor to animal humane organizations. Above all else, Jim loved his family and country. His generosity, love and brilliant intellect will be greatly missed. There will be a gathering of friends and family in Iowa on Memorial Day to celebrate his life.
