Obituary for BLAKELY

BLAKELY, JERRY an avid sailor, great friend, respected businessman, and valued mentor - died at the age of 70 on April 21, 2013 in Sequim, WA, following a brief bout with cancer. Jerry spent the last eight summers cruising the waters of British Columbia, Canada, his "heart's home," while living aboard his sailboat. He was happiest at the helm, feeling at one with the boat, the wind, and the water. He also pursued other passions, including recording the beauty that moved him through contemplative photography; finding his own rhythm through drumming; and tapping into his spirit through yoga, meditation, and chanting. Jerry lived in Placitas, New Mexico during the fall and winter of each of the last eight years. He learned to ski in his sixties, and carved the slopes of Ski Santa Fe for several seasons. He raised and trained two puppies when he'd never had pets before, and enjoyed "family walks" with them in Cibola National Forest. He was an award-winning amateur winemaker and initiated many appreciative friends into the joys of fine wines. To all Jerry's pursuits, he brought a care and attention to detail that was uniquely his own, "Jerry-izing" his friendships, as well as his boats, his homes, and his work. Jerry resided in Eugene, Oregon for over 30 years, where he co-founded and was President of Point Control, a computer software company. Upon his retirement from a successful business career in various industries, he taught business strategy in the University of Oregon's MBA program, where he was an alumnus. He called Placitas home after leaving Eugene, then moved to Sequim in December 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Mary Rear Blakely. He was also predeceased by his parents, Lucille and James Blakely of Dodge City, Kansas. Jerry is survived by his brother, Larry, and nephews, James and Benjamin; members of Mary's family who were as close as his own family; his "niece," Serin Bussell, and her husband, Tom; his close friend, Deborah Green, and her parents, Selma and Sidney Green. Jerry requested there be no formal service, but encouraged family and friends to come together, share an excellent bottle of wine, and raise a toast to a life well-lived. Jerry was instrumental in creating the Hendricks Park Native Plant Garden in Eugene, Oregon in dedication to his late wife, and memorials can be made in his name to: OCF Hendricks Park Native Plant Garden Fund (Oregon Community Foundation, 1221 Southwest Yamhill Street, Suite 100, Portland, OR 97205).
