MARTINEZ, KATIE FAITH Our beloved Katie, it has now been three years since your parting from this earth. In our hearts, souls and minds there has been no separation of our love, pain and memories of you. The depth of the pain due to your death is and likely always will be crushing on a daily basis. For us, there is no truth to the age-old adage "time heals all things." Thoughts of you either make us cry with grief or smile with infinite thankfulness to have known you. You will ALWAYS hold your place in this family. You inspire us to move through life day by day in honor of the short life you lived and the life you were unable to live. We ask for your guidance to the light of deliverance and please know we love you with all our being. Daddy, Mama, Sister and Brother

MERRILL, ISSA SAKAKI co-founder of the Cibola High School Student Citizens' Organization (CHSSCO) and an advocate for Albuquerque Sister Cities projects, died after a prolonged illness on Saturday, February 23rd. He was 32. Stricken in his teens by Batten's Disease, a progressive neurological disorder, Issa nevertheless graduated from high school and went on to study political science at the University of New Mexico. Though he was unable to continue past his junior year due to vision and mobility problems, he maintained an avid interest in politics through friends such as Art Schreiber and Fred Harris. The son of a leading Japanese contemporary poet, Nanao Sakaki and Corrales poet and author, Carol Merrill, Issa was named for the 18th century poet Kobayashi Issa. Issa was born in Albuquerque, lived in Taos for a year, and then became an unofficial "baby ambassador" to China while his mother taught English in Qu Fu, Shandong, China. After returning, he lived in Corrales and attended Corrales Elementary, Enchanted Hills Middle School and Cibola High. During the second half of his life, Issa faced his ordeals with laughter and continued enthusiasm for progressive causes - and the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved music, dogs, fishing, wildlife rescue and the N.M. Museum of Natural History and Science where he was a volunteer junior docent. Memorial contributions are encouraged to the Issa Sakaki Merrill Scholarship Fund as tax deductible donations through the UNM Foundation, 700 Lomas NE, 2 Woodward Center, Albuquerque, NM 87102-5227. The scholarship will be awarded to a student in political science or peace studies. He is survived by his mother; cousin Amanda Merrill; half-sister Maggie Tai Sakaki Tucker; nieces Emi and Suzette Gwertzman; nephew Robert Tucker Gwertzman; and half-brothers Yui and Mizu Sakaki Araki. The family expresses their deep gratitude for years of loving care from the staff of ARCA and the Albuquerque Friends Meeting (Quaker) for sustained support during his long illness. A memorial service at the Quaker meeting house, 1600 Fifth St. NW will be held in March. A pizza party celebrating his life is planned at Corrales Village Pizza, to be announced on his Facebook page.

LUKES, LORENE ADELL (DELL) died Thursday morning, February 21, 2013, at age 87. Born in Canton, Texas to cotton farmers, Dell grew to be a woman of rare fortitude and resourcefulness. She married Lieutenant Francis T. Lukes in 1943 at age 18 and, with Frank, raised five children. They moved to New York after they were married and from there, to numerous army bases throughout the United States, including Hawaii. They settled in Albuquerque in 1964, shortly before Frank retired from the army. Del was best known for her home cooking, which drew many to her table on a regular basis. Friends and family came to mark the seasons by Dell's cooking. Autumn wouldn't be autumn without Dell's homemade sauerkraut or her pot roast with braised red cabbage and caraway-seed dumplings. Winter wouldn't be as warm without her hearty soups and stews, and summer wouldn't be summer without her vinegar-mustard deviled eggs, pungent German potato salad, lime-dressed coleslaw, and key-lime pie. When Dell wasn't cooking, she occupied herself gardening, working as a school crossing guard, praying the Rosary, attending daily Mass, and serving as a member of the Marionites and Women's Guild at Our Lady of Annunciation Parish. Ever devoted to her husband, she became his sole caregiver during his long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. In recent years, Dell also enjoyed spending time with her friends at the New Heart Exercise Clinic. Predeceased by her husband and her sister, Christine, Dell is survived by her two brothers, Pete and Phil Rogers; her daughter, Frances Haughom of Eugene, Oregon; her four sons, Michael, Tom, Peter, and Paul, all of Albuquerque; ten grandchildren: Thomas Poth of Albuquerque, Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Lukes of Federick, Maryland, Christopher Haughom of Eugene, Oregon, Dr. Bryan Haughom of Chicago, Illinois, Matthew Haughom of Los Angeles, California, Michael Bortnik of Palo Alto, California, Greg Lukes of Livermore, California, Matthew Lukes of Boise, Idaho, and Rachel, Alex and Sophie Lukes, all of Albuquerque; seven great-grandchildren: Addison, Kestril, Tory, Taylor, Tatiana, and Terra Poth, Ella and Mia Bortnik, and Claire and Simone Lukes. The family invites friends to join them for the Rosary being recited as part of Our Lady of Annunciation's Parish Lenten Mission, on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will take place on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. also at Our Lady of Annunciation Parish, 2621 Vermont, NE, 87110.
