NESBITT, MARTIN ERWIN was born on November 10, 1923 in Cook County Illinois to James Bradshaw Nesbitt (an Irishman) and Catherine McLean Nesbitt (a Scottswoman). Martin lived in Ireland as a young child and at a young age moved with his family to Wisconsin where adventures galore awaited a young curious boy on the family farm. Martin recalled many wonderful stories that arose while he helped his father tend crops and farm animals. Martin befriended all animals including draft horses, farm cats and many dogs which he loved throughout his stay on that Wisconsin farm. Martin hunted in the woods nearby and fished the many creeks on and around his father's farm. Martin loved to hunt with one favorite dog named Chummy and the two brought game home frequently much to the delight of his proud parents. Martin's time on the family farm taught him many useful lessons including his ability to successfully grow anything, he truly had a green thumb and he loved nature and being outdoors. Martin strived to find joy from hard work his entire life. He worked on rail crews, sleeping in box cars as the work trains made their way across the Midwest defoliating rail beds and railways. In 1941 Martin joined the United States Marine Corps and served honorably attaining the rank of Corporal. His hunting skill proved valuable as he was a sharpshooter with military firearms. Upon completion of his military service, Martin landed a managerial job with the Southern Union Gas Company. The career he started as a young charismatic manager saw him all the way through retirement in 1988. Along the way he met his feisty young bride, Mary Catherine Murphy, married her in Clayton, New Mexico in 1951, reared four children, and enjoyed life with his family in Clayton, Portales, and Clovis. Martin enjoyed his retirement years in Belen, Albuquerque, and Las Cruces. Martin was one who was easy to like. He made friends every where he landed. He took a no nonsense approach to all aspects of life, yet had a good humor about him that was a natural draw he used to develop friendships. Martin was constantly learning from things he read and from conversations with interesting friends and family. Martin is survived by four children who he loved dearly, Jim (Patti), Anne (Brad), Timothy, and Patrick (Michele); six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and nephews and nieces. Martin considered many of his close friends as family. Being a private man, Martin asked for private services with his close family and will be buried alongside his loving wife at a family plot in Raton, NM. Marin was appreciative of the care he received at Memorial Medical Center and especially the care from Dr. Maidana-Paz and Dr. Bruce Greenfield. To encourage others to utilize the services of Hospice where Martin passed away on December 4, 2013, the family would appreciate donations be made in Martin's honor to Mesilla Valley Hospice Foundation, 299 E. Montana, Las Cruces, NM 88005. Arrangements by Getz Funeral Home, corner of Solano and Bowman Ave. To sign our local on line guestbook please log onto www.GetzCares.com

GIACCARDO, MARC ALAN Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on October 22, 1946 to Irene and Louis Giaccardo, was a beloved father, grandfather; husband, brother, uncle, and friend. Marc was taken from us too soon on November 24, 2013, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Pacharee; his daughters, Gina and Genevieve; his daughters' mother, and former wife, Felice Lucero; granddaughters, Cyrrene and Mavri; sister, Anita Geis; brothers, Edward and Kim; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Marc, a LEED-AP certified architect and AIA member, studied at Drexel University in Philadelphia; where his mentor, Louis Kahn, profoundly influenced him. He continued his studies at the University of New Mexico, earning his Master's degree in 1977. Marc practiced architecture in Albuquerque, independently and for firms Long and Waters, Barker/Bohl, and Van Gilbert Architects. His passion for sustainable design, technology, and natural materials manifested itself from the earliest of his works, including a first-place Reynolds Aluminum competition award for an innovative "green" Alaskan pipeline road design; the geodesic dome-based Gibbon Flight Cage at the Albuquerque Zoo; a passive solar print studio for El Cerro Graphics in Los Lunas; the Bliss House; and the NM Educators Federal Credit Union in the North Valley. In 1980, he designed the gondola, Jules Verne, for balloonist Maxie Anderson who along with Don Ida, attempted to fly around the world the following year. Marc was a founding member of the Albuquerque United Artists; an organization comprised of over 200 visual and performing artists, and served as its first president. His distinguished teaching career spanned four decades, beginning at the University of New Mexico (UNM) as a graduate teaching assistant to another mentor and dear family friend, Bob Cohlmeyer; and as an instructor at the Technical-Vocational Institute (TVI) in Albuquerque. He went on to hold Associate Professorships at The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, DC; Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX; and the University of Texas (UTSA) in San Antonio, TX. While at CUA from 1985 to 1992, Marc was the founding director of the Computer Aided Design Lab Studio (CAD Lab), where students were introduced to early AutoCAD software and Mac computers. He was the Senior Editor for the 8th edition of Architectural Graphic Standards, which included a chapter on historic preservation for the first time. At Texas Tech from 1992 to 2004, he was President of the Faculty Senate, and Principal Design Architect for the Junction Campus master plan proposal that emphasized sustainable design principles. At UTSA from 2004 to 2009, Marc revamped the environmental systems courses and developed a junior level competition design studio, focused on sustainable design and technology. He authored and negotiated the proposal for the new Construction Science and Management degree program, and was appointed Director at its inception in 2008. The program successfully attained the status of the Department of Construction Science on March 1, 2013. Marc retired from teaching at the end of 2009, to develop his greatest project, Verdant Design-Build, LLC. This work was the culmination of his life-long pursuits: specializing in environmentally sustainable building design, passive and hybrid solar, and renewable, low energy materials; and applying the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Regenerate. Loyal to his Pittsburgh roots, Marc was an avid Steelers fan, as well as a talented basketball player and all-around athlete. Marc's proclivity for reason, immense knowledge, steady guidance and sense of humor made him the best of fathers and teachers, and the truest of friends. We hold him close in our minds and hearts, with love and strength always. Services will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Resurrection of The Lord Parish, 7990 W. Military Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78227. Visitation, 9:00-10:00 a.m.; followed by Mass, 10:00-11:00 a.m. A memorial service for Marc will be held in Albuquerque in the spring; details to come. KEAR, ELSIE Born in 1919 of Northern Italian emigrant parents, her first language, culture, and name was Italian. Elsie later shared her Italian heritage with her husband and her children. As a nursing student, she served in the US Cadet Nurse Corps during WWII. When she graduated from Massachusetts Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1946, Elsie began a 45 year career dedicated to helping others. Her areas of expertise included surgical nurse, obstetrics, premature infants, school nurse, hospital patients, ski patrol, international flight nurse, home hospice nursing, and flu shots. Elsie, the adventuress, traveled alone across the continent to begin her nursing career at Scripps La Jolla. She was amazed to see oranges actually growing on trees! During a rooftop sunbathing session, the nurses were astonished to experience their first earthquake! Elsie met and married Don Kear, a young sailor home on leave from the first (1947-1948) around-the-world cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge. This began a 30 year US Navy career / marriage of exciting travel and constant moves. Elsie relished each duty station. In Adak, Alaska in the Aleutian Island Chain, Elsie collected and labeled wildflowers found hidden in the tundra. She cut whale vertebrae from washed-ashore carcasses for lamp bases. In Albuquerque, Elsie learned to snow ski at age 50. With her RN and expert black-diamond skiing skills, she was hired to rescue injured skiers as "ski patrol". Elsie combined her love of travel with nursing, traveling to the former USSR, Africa, China, and Japan to study surgery, alternative medicines, hospitals, and nursing. Elsie became an avid gardener in Albuquerque with over 25 rose bushes in her yard. An institution at the Albuquerque Garden Center, she put on symposia for the State Garden Clubs, earned her "Life Judge" credentials for the state fair, became a state certified "master gardener" and helped all her neighbors with pests, plants, and problems in the garden. Learning to paint in both oil and watercolors, Elsie preferred flowers as her subject of over 100 completed paintings. Elsie and her husband both loved music and dancing, going out on the boat, fishing (Elsie always caught the first or the biggest - much to Don's chagrin), camping in their RV, bowling, & passing on the activities they loved to their children Randy (Seattle) & Valerie (San Diego, CA). Elsie Kear will be remembered for her infectious laugh, blue eyes, big smile, friendliness, love of people, cheerful happy personality, plaid suits with matching hats, and energetic love of life. Funeral service will be held December 9th at French Mortuary on Wyoming at 10:00am. Elsie will be laid to rest with Don, her loving husband of 47 years, in the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30pm.
