Obituary for ORTEGA

ORTEGA, TOM Thomas Joseph Ortega was born on October 22, 1948 and died January 4, 2014 in Grants, NM. He was the eldest son of Lotario D. Ortega and Mary Smalley Ortega. Tom was preceded in death by his brothers Lotario Eugene Ortega and John Andrew Ortega. He is survived by his siblings Mary L. Ortega, Teresa Heaphy and her husband Stephen; Ann Johnson; Peter Ortega and wife Malinda; Paul Ortega and wife Michele; Philip Ortega; Angelica Benavidez and her husband Mario. Tom had a large extended family of nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, as well as, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Tom was a graduate of Lourdes High School in Albuquerque, and of the UNM Pharmacy School. He was active in the Democratic party of New Mexico, and served as Mayor of the Village of Milan, NM, until his death. Tom was a prominent New Mexico pharmacist, serving on the State of New Mexico Board of Pharmacy, including one term as Chairman. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and many friends who recall his generous and kind spirit. The funeral mass will take place on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on Lomas Blvd. near Pennsylvania. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary. A memorial service will also be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Village of Milan Community Center in Milan, NM. O'NEAL, MARTHA &Quot;JANE&Quot; Age 86, peacefully passed on Monday, January 6, 2014. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Melvin K. O'Neal; sons, Melvin R. O'Neal and wife Sheila, and Kenneth D. O'Neal; grandchildren, Jonathan, Michelle, Kayla, and Spencer; great-grandchildren, Zoe, Josiah and Judah; and brother, Harold T. Clayton and wife Carol. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore Julius Clayton and Amelia Irene Clayton of Cumberland, MD. Jane worked for Los Alamos National Laboratories for 25 years. She was a member of Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 3:00 pm at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Rd. NE., with a reception to follow. MARTIN, NOEL D., USNR LTC Age 91, a resident of Albuquerque, NM intermittently since 1944 passed away on January 3, 2014. He was born November 27, 1922 in Greenleaf, KS. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Daniel T. and Flora and his sister, Regina Martin Maguire all three here in Albuquerque; and two nephews Greg Maguire in Albuquerque and Marty May in Anaconda, MT. Noel is survived by his sisters, Virginia (Dr. Robert) Manion in Circle, MT and Dolores Ann (Don) May in Anaconda, MT; brother-in-law, W.E. (Bill) Maguire of Albuquerque, NM and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances. Noel was a renowned pianist in the 1940's and 50's, playing on KOB radio and other venues around town. When his hearing deteriorated, he stopped playing because he couldn't hear the full notes of the piano. He came to Albuquerque in the 1940's after enlisting in the U.S. Navy and serving in WWII, Korean War and Viet Nam War, he enrolled at UNM where he received a masters in Economics. He worked in Albuquerque National Bank before retiring from many years of Federal service. He is remembered for raising several registered dogs and leaves Dempsey, a registered Irish Terrier behind. He was instrumental in organizing The Ancient Order of Hibernians for Brother Mathias of the Brothers of the Good Shepherd. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, 6:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Fr. Thomas Mescall will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, corner of Lomas & Tennessee NE. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith NE. GABALDON, JAYCOB JOEL Jaycob Joel Gabaldon born Aug. 26, 1977, passed away Dec. 28 2013. Jaycob is survived by wife Krista; son Daimon and daughter Kyndall Gabaldon; mother Mary Louise; father Larry; sister Laura and stepbrother Larry Jr; grandfather Ralph Gabaldon; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles whom love him and will miss him. FLOREZ, MARCELLA S. On Friday, January 3rd, 2013, Marcella Florez passed away peacefully in her home with family at her side. Marcella was born in San Acacia, NM on August 10, 1935 to the late Pilar and Brigida Saiz. She moved to Albuquerque, NM with her family in 1942. She graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1954 and the Western School for Secretaries in 1957. Growing up, she loved dancing and the fiestas. She also loved to travel whenever possible. In 1959 she married the love of her life, Joe Florez, and they had four beautiful children. She was very active in her children's lives and activities including football, little league baseball, soccer, and chorus. She was very passionate about community and politics. As a member and officer of Duke City Business and Professional Women, she helped start the speaker's bureau for the Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence. In the 90's she attended the University of Phoenix and received her Associates degree. She was a member of Risen Savior Catholic Church and was a volunteer in the church office. Marcella was preceded in death by her husband Joe, grandson Christopher Lavarta, sisters Tomasita Mirabal, Merlinda Martinez, and brother Victor Saiz. She is survived by her children, Mariano Florez, Joanne Florez, Rick Florez and his wife Lanore, Storm Florez and his wife Annalise; her step children Lisa Lavarta, and Jody Flores and his wife Patty; her grandsons Joseph, Jerod, and Maulen Florez and Greg Lavarta; her brother Luis Saiz and his wife Ramona, her sisters Mary Sanchez and Novie Sanchez; her brothers in law, Leo Martinez, Roy and David Flores and sisters in law, Lala Ledezma and husband Olmedo, Vickie Sanchez, and Velia Aguilar and husband Nick. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly. A Rosary is scheduled for 7pm, Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Daniel's Funeral Home (7601 Wyoming). Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10am, Friday, January 10, 2014 at Risen Savior Catholic Church. Burial is scheduled for the following Monday. DUMAS, RICHARD Age 84, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013. He is survived by his partner, Edith Tarbescu, of Albuquerque; a nephew, William Meek, of Chicago; and numerous friends around the country. He grew up in Chicago and attended Dubuque University, in Iowa, where he attained a degree in chemistry. As an officer in the Navy, he was stationed in Japan and the Philippines during the Korean conflict. After leaving the Navy, he worked in San Francisco and later moved to Houston where he sold construction material to architects. An avid skier, tennis player, hiker, and motorcycle enthusiast, Richard lost his ability to enjoy the outdoors due to a rare blood disease, MDS. He was challenged by the disease but fought valiantly to the end. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Donations in his name can be sent to the MDS Foundation.

CLOVER, MARLENE Marlene Clover, 80, a resident of Rio Communities, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 4, 2014. Marlene is preceded in death by three of her children, Carolyn K. Gwinn, Pamela S. Argetsinger, and Ervin Dale Clover. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert L. Clover of Rio Communities; one son, Robert N. Clover of Los Lunas; one son-in-law, Mark Gwinn of Rio Communities; and one daughter, Connie M. Brown and husband, William R. Brown of Los Lunas; 14 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was loved and will be missed by three brothers, two sisters and many other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Marlene was born in Depew, Oklahoma, on May 5th, 1933. Marlene moved with her family to Tolleson, AZ, where she met and married Robert L. Clover and soon after began a family together having five children. Robert and Marlene moved to Los Lunas in 1972, where Robert started a family owned and operated trucking company in 1979. Marlene worked as the office manager until they retired in 2006. She lived her life as a Christian and was a member of Valley Christian Church in Albuquerque. Her hobbies included bowling (she participated on many bowling leagues), board games and puzzles, traveling, and cooking, but more than anything she loved to spend her time with her husband, family, and friends. Marlene had a very warm and giving personality, anyone and everyone who met her fell in love with her. Marlene experienced so much loss and heartache, having lost three of her five children yet she was the sweetest, strongest, kindest, most patient and loving woman. She was a wonderful role model to her children, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 7, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at FRENCH - University. CANDELARIA, CANDY Age 64, our precious angel and warrior, surrounded by her family passed away on January 03, 2014 after a long illness. Candy enjoyed many sports from water and snow skiing to ballooning. Candy was a mentor to many women in need. She will be greatly missed. She leaves behind her husband Ralph; daughter Rhonda and husband Dave Zier; son Michael Candelaria; and granddaughter Ashley Rae Martinez; along with Candy's siblings and other relatives. BERND, LAURA LEE Laura Lee Bernd died on December 29, 2013. She is survived by her three sons, Jay and Tim Hill, Ron Bernd; six grandchildren; one great- grandson; and her beloved German shepherd, Kahlua. She was preceded in death by her husband David P. Bernd. Laura was born on September 4, 1936 in St Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, NM to Marion and Lorene Humphreys. She and her mother moved to Denver, CO where she graduated from South High School and attended the University of Colorado while helping in her mother's beauty salon, which was the first interracial beauty salon in Denver. She married John E Hill in 1955 and had two sons, Jay and Tim. They divorced in 1957. On September 26, 1959 she married David P Bernd. They had one son, Ron. The family moved several times because of David's military career. In 1971, they moved to Albuquerque, NM where she discovered a passion for sewing, working at Stretch and Sew, Joann's Fabrics, and Quilt Works. She was a talented quilter and taught quilting for many years. Laura went back to college to continue her education in the field of anthropology. She traveled to Belize in Central America to work on archeological digs for two sessions. She also loved collecting classic Disney pieces and visiting Disney World with Ron. She struggled through Alzheimer's disease and went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2013. Her warmth, smile, sense of humor, and love of life will be missed by everyone who knew her. A memorial service will be held in Laura's honor at Sunset Memorial Park on January 10, 2014 at 2pm.

BACA, DAVID F. 63, died December 21, 2013 from heart failure. Born July 28, 1950 he was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Vera Baca. David is survived by son, Chad; grandchildren, Alexis, Matthew, Serenity, and Gabriel; brother, Charles; sisters, Katherine and Yolanda; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; friends; and certainly not least his longtime love of 18 years, Judy. David was an electrician & member of Local 611 IBEW for over 40 years. David was gifted, having an understanding of the universe like no other. A talented artist, just one of his many gifts. David was affectionately known to many of his friends as "Too Tall". It was not uncommon to hear David singing as he knew words to so many songs. David was a gentle soul and will be missed terribly. ALVARADO, JULIA Our sweet, beautiful, darling mother went to be with our Lord on January 4, 2014, with her family by her side. She was born on June 24, 1927 in Carlsbad, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband Amador Sr. & son Amador Jr. Julia is survived by daughter Mary Lou Miera & husband Albert; daughter Annette Montoya and companion Randy Bustamante; daughter Linda Fresquez & husband Lenny; son Gerald Alvarado & wife Nettie, and daughter Janie Alvarado. Grandchildren: Angela & Stephanie Miera, Jerome & Monica Montoya, Jocelyn & Nathan Ebell, Jennifer Montoya, Leonard, LeeAnna, and Lamar Fresquez. Great-grandchildren: Angelique & Andres Ulibarri, Hailey Montoya-Gomez, Elias Ruiz, Marcus & Max Baca, Marissa & Buddy (JJ) Montoya, and Isaac Ebell. Great Great-grandchildren: Joshua Saiz and her beloved dog Nemo. Julia is also survived by her sisters Helen Orona, Mikala Granger, and brother, Manuel Ramirez. Our mom was a joy to everyone who knew her and lived each day to the fullest. Her passions in life were her faith, family, and celebration. She was an active parishioner at St. Therese Church for over 50 years, participated as a choir member, lecturer, and a member of the Legion of Mary. She was an avid crafter for 30 years and could be seen selling her crafts around. She will be forever remembered for her infectious laugh and warm hugs. A rosary will be recited Tuesday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shrine of St. Therese Little Flower, 300 Mildred NW. Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 8 at 9:00 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Therese Little Flower. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. TRUBY, FRANK KEELER Frank passed away peacefully on January 6th, 2014. He was born in Painesville, Ohio in 1924 to Frank and Florence Truby. He attended Hiram College for four years where he met and married Betsy Jean Kirby in 1948. They were happily married for 64 years before Besty's passing in 2012. His children are Thomas Lee wife Linda, Scott Robin wife Betsy and Susan Alida husband Robert. Grandchildren: Justin, Brianna and Michael. Frank is a veteran of World War II and served in the Army Air Corp. He was a graduate of Hiram College and received his Master's degree from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. He retired from Sandia National Laboratories as a research physicist, performing his work with integrity, accuracy & commitment. His lifelong hobby of boating included many boats, some of which he built himself, up to his last beloved houseboat. He shared many enjoyable years with his wife and family on different lakes of the Southwest. He also cherished and adored his many golden retrievers, Molly being his last beloved pet. To all who knew him he was a humble man, pure of heart, always putting others before him. Frank was continually grateful to others for what they did for him, and was well known for his statement "Thank you for all that you do for me." Dad, Gramps we thank you for all you for all you have done for us, we will forever love and miss you. His memorial will be at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust St, SE Albuquerque, NM 87102, on Thursday, January 9th, 2014 at 1:00 PM, with reception to follow. STORMO, VIRGIL Lt. Col. Virgil M. "Stormy" Stormo, USAF (Ret.), died in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 4, 2014, at the age of 92. Col. Stormo was born in Hayti, South Dakota, on June 3, 1921. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot in World War II, Korea, and into the Vietnam era. He subsequently worked for many years for Wells Fargo Bank as an auditing officer and senior auditor before retiring. He was a loving husband, father, brother, son, and friend, and will be truly missed. After Col. Stormo's first wife, Marjorie, passed away, he married Hazel B. Morrow, who survives him, in the late 1990s. He is also survived by his children Gary Stormo and wife Sue of Colorado, Ron Stormo and wife Monica of California, and daughter Sally Bjork and husband Bob of California; by his stepchildren Thomas Morrow and wife Sherry of Colorado, Rosalind Cooper and husband Terry of Albuquerque, Julia Huchmala and husband John of Albuquerque, and Baker Morrow and wife JoAnn Strathman of Albuquerque; and by many grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Col. Stormo will be buried with full military honors in a grave-side service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2014. STETSON, AILEEN M. Aileen Rosalie Mulvey Stetson was born in November of 1925 in Baltimore MD, daughter of Michael Bernard Mulvey and Marian Elizabeth Livers. She died at the age of 88 on January 3, 2014 of complications of Parkinson's Disease following a long illness. Aileen was a graduate of Seton High School of Baltimore and earned a degree in Biology from Notre Dame College of Maryland. She worked at John Hopkins in the Tuberculosis Unit and later at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York. For many years she managed and operated Sunset Lodge & Camps in Jefferson, Maine with her husband Robert Baker Stetson, (deceased 1974). She served as a medical secretary to Frank Avantaggio, MD in Damariscotta, Maine and in later years was office manager for the Albuquerque Equine Clinic in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is survived by son Robert Garret Stetson and his wife Patricia of Albuquerque New Mexico; son Bernard Chandler Stetson and his wife Mary Jo of Steubenville Ohio; ten grandchildren Jeremy Hoover and Faith Hoover of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Anna Rose Stetson of Thornton, Colorado, Jesse, Gabe, Michael, David, Peter, Luke, and Joseph Stetson of Steubenville, Ohio; three sisters - Marian Hogan and Geraldine Roberts of Timmonium, Maryland and Bernadette Johnston of Venice, Florida; and her sister-in-law and life-long friend Betty Jean Stetson of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Aileen was among the most gentle, kind and considerate individuals with a wonderful gift of hospitality. It was often mentioned that the way she lived her life was never about her, but about family, friends and what she could do for others whenever possible. She will be missed by all who have known and loved her. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 8th at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, (619 Copper Avenue NW, Albuquerque, NM). Interment will take place at St Patrick Catholic Church Cemetery in Newcastle, Maine.
