Obituary for HALSELL

HALSELL, ROBERT &Quot;BOB&Quot; D. COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR US ARMY - RET. age 52, passed away on May 16, 2013 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was born on November 3, 1960 in Las Vegas, NM, the son of Thomas "Tom" R. and Shelby K. (Abel) Halsell. Bob grew up in Hatch, NM and graduated from Hatch Valley High School in 1979. He was an outstanding football and basketball player. He was also actively involved in FFA and was member of the 1978 National Meat Judging Championship team. Bob enlisted into the US Army in May, 1979 at Ft. Bliss, TX. He served the majority of his career in the 101st Airborne at Ft. Campbell, KY and the 10th Mountain Division at Ft. Drum, NY. His deployments included Southwest Asia, Bosnia/ Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. His medals are numerous and rightfully earned: Bronze Star Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, eight Army Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Meads, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Noncommissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Driver Mechanic Badge, and the Bronze German Armed Forces Parachutist Badge. He retired from the Army in September of 2005 at Ft. Drum, NY and received the Legion of Merit Award. Upon retirement, Bob returned to Clarksville, TN to breed and raise horses. But, retirement did not last too long and he began working for several defense contracting companies until the time of his death. Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Shelby K. Halsell; father-in-law and mother in-law, Clyde F. and Ople "Vicki" Hall; maternal-grandparents, Mildred Edith "Mickey" McCormack and August Abel; his paternal-grandparents, Thomas Eli "Buster" and Jessie Halsell; maternal-great-grandparents, Oral and Anna Thurston, August William and Hedwig Agusta Caroline Abel; aunt, Patricia G. Halsell. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Jeannene Halsell of Clarksville, TN; children, Deanna Lea Herrington and husband, Kip, of Pearl Harbor, HI; Kathryn Elizabeth Arrington and husband, Sascha, of Hobbs, NM; Cody Tyrell Halsell of Clarksville, TN; and Randy McCullough of Clarksville, TN; grandchildren, Joel T. Rittenberry; Sabrina N. McCullough, Selena T. McCullough, Brody A. McCullough, Gage Herrington, Kyan Herrington, Thomas Patterson, and Liliana Bryn Henderson; father, Thomas R. Halsell and wife, Barbara, of Hatch, NM; sisters, Kathryn Anne Anderson and husband, David, of Prosper, TX; Jessie Lynne Newton and husband, Jim, of Aloha, OR; uncles, Bill Abel and wife, Ruth, of La Junta, CO, and Bill Halsell and wife, June, of Rincon, NM; nieces and nephews, Shelby and Katie Newton of Aloha, OR, and Debra, Brittany, and David Anderson of Prosper, TX; cousins, Bill Abel of La Junta, CO, Tim Abel of Garden City, KS, Sharon Abel of Las Vegas, NV, Dawn Harris of Pueblo, CO, Anne Gentile and husband, Dan, of Akron, OH, and Joan Stasi and husband, Frank, of Los Lunas, NM; and many special friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at First Baptist Church, 421 N. Franklin Street, Hatch, NM.
