CHANIN, ABRAHAM S. Abraham (Abe) S. Chanin, long-time journalist, died at his Albuquerque home on February 1, 2014. He brought energy and insight to both sports and editorial writing during 36 years at the Arizona Daily Star. He was also editor and publisher of The Arizona Post, a newspaper for the Tucson Jewish community, and Collegiate Baseball, a national publication. After retiring from the Arizona Daily Star, he taught what he had learned in the University of Arizona Journalism Department (1976-1988) and created and directed the Bloom Southwest Jewish Archives at the University of Arizona (1988-1994). He wrote several books on topics ranging from U of A athletic history to freedom of the press and Jewish history. He was also a frequent speaker and directed multiple educational tours with his wife Mildred as a way of living up to his pledge to take her around the world. He received many honors over the his very active life but was most proud of his wife Mildred, his daughter Beth and her husband Dr. Lance Rudolph and their son Sean Rudolph, wife Anna Jancewicz and grandson Jona and the many students and staff members he mentored. He and his wife moved to Albuquerque early in this century to be with family. Special thanks go to his many friends, colleagues, extended family, and all his recent caretakers, especially Patricia Ramczyk and Campion Care. Burial will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery, Rabbi Min Kantrowitz presiding, on February 7, 2014, where Mildred already lies at rest.
