EMENY, GEORGE BROOKS JR. Age 72, of Chase Hill Road, Andover, NH, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at his home. A lifelong learner both in and out of the classroom, George graduated from Hotchkiss School CT in 1959, and Mount Union College OH in 1964 and earned a MALS degree from Wesleyan CT in 1970. A youthful, empowering soul, he taught at Proctor Academy in Andover, NH from 1964-1988 and from 2007-2013. George had a deep respect for diverse cultures, and was an accomplished student of Native American--and specifically Lakota Sioux--ways. His enthusiasm for life was reflected in deep, caring relationships that he demonstrated outwardly, even to those passing through. He was truly authentic: a naturalist; an explorer; a playful, kind and generous man who experienced life with a sense of reverence and wonder. George had many interests and hobbies including woodworking, steel drums, hand tools, sailing, horsemanship, blacksmithing, rock-climbing, primitive skills, languages, music, and antique machinery. George lived in Andover and New London, NH before moving to Ojai, CA where he taught at the Thacher School for several years before spending sixteen years in Albuquerque, NM teaching at Sandia Prep School. He returned to Andover, NH in 2007. Learning and teaching, both inside and outside of the classroom, were his passion for fifty years, and his love for his students lives through them. George deeply loved family: his wife, Deborah Emeny of Andover, NH; six children: Brooks and his wife, Jennifer Emeny of Bozeman, MT, Amy and her husband, Keith Pattison of Hanover, NH, Rebecca Emeny and her husband, Michael Stoffel of Grafing, Germany, Lindsay Hiken of Palo Alto, CA, Molly Wales and her husband, Craig Cornett of Athens, OH and Rosie and her husband, Danny Norlander of Salem, OR; 14 grandchildren: Megan, Kate, Jillian, Morgan, Jack, Hilton, Anthony, Kenzie, Brian, Lexi, David, Essie, Lola and Oliver; two sisters: Elizabeth Renkert of Kaycee, WY and Jeanne Emeny of Port Townsend, WA. An open house gathering to celebrate George will be held May 11 from 2:00-5:00 PM at Proctor Academy's Stone Chapel. Gifts in his memory may be made to the George B. Emeny, Jr. Memorial Fund at Lake Sunapee Bank, PO Box 274, Andover, NH 03216. The funds will support causes prized and cherished by George.
