In September of 1943 Llew volunteered for the draft and spent 28 months in the South Pacific. After the war, Llew attended the University of Buffalo where he received a Masters Degree in Physical Chemistry. While at the University of Buffalo, he met and fell in love with Jean Schuster. They were married in 1948. Llew received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Cal Tech in 1950 under the tutelage of Richard Badger, a towering figure in the field of vibrational spectroscopy. After a brief postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester, Llew joined a group of young chemists at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (now LANL) that formed the nucleus of what became, at the time, one of the strongest Inorganic Chemistry groups in the world (INC-4). Llew was a man of many talents and he was made a Fellow at LANL. He mentored a number of successful scientists including three that went on to become Laboratory Fellows.
