GARCIA, NINO July 16, 1934 - July 28, 2014 The Albuquerque community was saddened to hear that one of their native residents, whose career spanned from Barelas to Broadway, suffered a cardiac arrest on July 28, 2014 while on vacation in Madrid, Spain. Nino was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Saturnino (Nino) and Louisa (Lua) Garcia. From an early age, it was noted by all, that he was musically gifted with "perfect pitch" (voice), able to play complex classical music scores on the piano, and with perfect posture & strength he was able to excel in both Ballet Espanol (Flamenco) and Modern Dance. He grew up and received his education in Albuquerque, graduating with a BFA & MA in piano and voice from the University of New Mexico. After graduation from UNM, Nino was in the Army--heavy weapons--infantry division. He was transferred to the US Army Band, where he shared the piano bench with Peter Duchin. Upon discharge from the Army, Nino went to New York City with his duffle bag and $99 "muster out" pay. He had further studies at the Julliard School of Music, Westminster Choir College and Queens College in New York. Nino learned Modern Dance from Martha Graham and had Spanish Dance Classes with Teresa and Mariquita Flores. He studied acting under Mr. Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. To enhance his vocal skills, Nino was coached by Lily Wexberg and Vera Byrne. He also expanded his piano key board skills to mastering the playing of a pipe organ under the tutelage of Dr. Paul-Martin Marki, Richard Amend, Nina Ancona, and Wesley Selby. The early years of Nino's vast professional musical career started as a Flamenco dancer and Music Director with Maria Alba and Ramon de los Reyes Dance Company. He toured the United States as pianist and Musical Director for Ximenez-Vargas Ballet Espanol for eight years. Nino was the opening act for the McGuire Sisters ,Tommy Sands and the legend Marlene Ditrich. She was his favorite because it was all glamour and every detail was worked out to perfection. In NYC, Nino started playing piano for various voice teachers, dance classes, and opera workshops with people like Doris Doree. People noticed that Nino sight read very well, so the word spread around and Nino got more and more work. He played piano in all the rehearsal studios of the time (on 6th Avenue and 47th Street; Variety Arts on 46th; Jerry Leroys on 8th Avenue & 47th; Showcase on 8th and 56th; Alexaders on 57th.) Nino would take a quick subway ride up to the Ansonia Hotel and the sister building to play for dozens of teachers. He had studies at Jacob Pillow, so he met many dancers and played the piano for them. Among them were Carola Goya and Matteo. Carola played beautiful castanet solos to great Spanish music. Others were Rosario Galan; Elba O Campo (the great queen of the Gypsies); Carmen Amaya; Maria Alba; Ramon de los Reyes; Roberto Iglesias and many others. Nino also played piano for many singers and instrumentalists, such as, Rjui Mascaarenas; Amalia Rodrigues; and Vera Brynner. Columbia Artists hired Nino as an accompanist. He stayed with them for about 10 years, traveling all over the world doing "one night stands" and "community concerts" for William Primrose, George Fenley, Lola Beltran, the Ortiz Trio (later known as the Coronados). Nino was also the pianist for the Graz Opera School in Graz, Austria; the Spoleto Festival in Italy (where he met his good friend/Broadway & International star Patti LuPone); and the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival (for 13 seasons). For six years, Nino was also a Chorus Teacher and Musical Director for the New York City Public School System. A job he did not particularly enjoy, but it paid the bills. His first job from pianist to Lead Tenor was in "Son of Irene". This was a production directed and choreographed by the great & talented Busby Berkely. Then summer stock with the Kansas City Starlite Theatre and Casa Manana in Texas. Nino was hired by the New York City Opera Company in 1966 and was a full-time member of their ensemble until 1973 as a Tenor. In1973, Nino was hired by the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City as a Full time member of their Chorus. He was already a well-seasoned performer with almost half-a-century of experience. Plus, Nino had previously worked part-time in the "Old Met Opera House" as Security where he was given the honor of escorting Hubert Humphrey through three passage ways of the old Met to his seat. Nino lived for music twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. On Sundays, he was the Organist & Choir Director for many churches in NYC. Among them were The Central Methodist Church, Brooklyn; First Presbyterian Church, Whitestone; St. James Episcopal Church, Flushing; United Methodist Church, Jackson Heights; North Congregational Church, Bronx; St. Lucy's - St. Patrick's, Brooklyn; and Emmet Fox Church of the Healing Christ. Tragedy struck Nino on November 3, 2002, after his performance at the Metropolitan Opera. Nino was an innocent driver who became involved in a criminal police chase of armed robbers resulting in a multi vehicle accident in which his car was struck on the driver's side and subsequently rolled over several times. Nino suffered multiple trauma; the most serious of which was an aortic dissection (the same type of injury that killed Princess Diana). Not too many people can survive this injury yet alone the multiple broken bones and other severely injured organs in his body. Through prayer and the talented medical staff at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Nino kept hanging on to life. Unfortunately, a few weeks after his admittance to the hospital, Nino went into cardiac arrest; was deprived of oxygen for five minutes; and had to have his tracheostomy tube in his throat replaced. It took Nino months to fully come out of his medically induced coma. It took years of physical therapy for him to learn to do everything again. His beautiful Tenor voice was gone and his career with the Metropolitan Opera was over. Nino had to retire from singing. Since Nino was always married to his music career, he was determined to not let his disabilities limit him. He left New York and returned to the beautiful home he had built for his mother (behind their original adobe house) in Albuquerque. His mother, Lua, nurtured her baby son until she died at 100. Nino kept pressing on. And as they say in show business, "PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE," and Nino took that to heart by playing the organ. At the time of his death, he was the Organist and Choir Director for the First Presbyterian Church in Belen. Nino was preceded in death by his parents, Saturnino & Louisa Garcia, and brother Andrew L. Garcia, Captain USN, (Ret). He is survived by his brother Ernie Candelaria (aka Ernie Kemm); his sister Kathryn Garcia and her children Cindy Garcia-Uyenoyama, Rob, & Nina Sanchez; his sister-in-law Vickie Garcia and children Andy, Steve, Mike, Tom (whose son Tyler was born on Nino's birthday) & Theresa Garcia-Stohlman; as well as many great nieces & nephews, cousins, and hundreds of friends around the world. He was greatly loved and will be missed by many ......especially Isleta & Sandia Casinos. Cremation took place in Madrid, Spain. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 412 Stover Avenue SW, ALB on Saturday, September 6th, 2014 at 10:00a.m. At a later date his cremations will be buried alongside his mother, Lua, whom he loved and spoiled all his days. GONZALES, ADELINA from Albuquerque, New Mexico, age 92, died August 28, 2014. Mrs. Gonzales was called "Little Grandma" by her grandchildren. Mrs. Gonzales was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Andres Gonzales, and several family members: Joe Louie, Rose Lucero, Ernest Gonzales, Andy Gonzales, Pete Gonzales, Trini, Manual, and baby Richard. She is survived by 4 sons; 5 daughters; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and a sister. A Viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo. GARCIA, ROSE A. Age 73, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, went to be with the Lord, Monday, August 25, 2014. She is survived by her three daughters; two sons; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and three brothers. Mrs. Garcia was preceded in death by her husband, Marcial Garcia; and sons, Patrick, Charlie, and Eric. Rose was fun-loving. She loved Elvis. She was known for her beautiful smile. GARCIA, JOSE &Quot;PAUL&Quot; Jose "Paul" Garcia, age 78, resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico died quietly at his home in the Torreon neighborhood surrounded by his four daughters on August 26, 2014. Jose was born in Rowe, New Mexico on May 20, 1936. Jose referred to Rowe as "The Cultural Center of the Universe." Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Roman Garcia and Sofia H. Garcia, two siblings, Julian Garcia and Johnny Garcia. Jose is survived by his Aunt Angie Vigil; siblings Albert (Ersenia) Herrera, Viola Garcia Serrano, Jenifer Garcia DeVolder, Roman Garcia Jr., Amelia (Tony) Lucero and Vina (Les) Thill; and his friend and mother to his children, Antonia Nuanes Pineda. Jose is survived by his daughters, Bernadette Garcia-Roger (Genne Roger), Sophie Garcia Bettendorf (Robert Bettendorf), Patricia Garcia and Margaret Garcia de Duran (Bronson Duran). GALLEGOS, MARIE DOLORES (&Quot;DOLORES&Quot;) In the early hours of August 22, 2014, Marie Dolores ("Dolores") Gallegos peacefully passed away. Dolores, 75, bravely faced a terminal diagnosis of gastric cancer, refused chemotherapy, and chose to live out her final days as fully as possible with her children and grandchildren. Dolores is survived by her children: Pia Gallegos, Yolanda Gallegos, Ruben Gallegos and his spouse, Christina, and Victoria Gallegos and her spouse, Ben Lankasky; her grandchildren: Luna, Alma, and Che Olavarra Gallegos, Marina and Ingrid Hartzell Gallegos, Catherine, Ramon, Ruben, and Elizabeth Gallegos; her siblings: Mollie Romero, Paul Gutierrez, Fannie Tafoya, Ignacio Gutierrez, and Rita Medina; several nephews and nieces; and Amber, her golden retriever. FIKE, WILLIAM (BILL) J. age 60, lost his battle with cancer on August 25, 2014 at approx. 2:35 pm. He passed peacefully at home with his wife Debbie and family members surrounding him singing "Jesus is the Savior of My Soul". It was as though the room was filled with the voices of angels calling him into the kingdom of God. When the singing stopped, his spirit had left and he was gone... Praise God for such a beautiful passing. Bill was born 11/7/1953 in Akron, Ohio and was well known as "Trucker Bill" for 31 years and "Hot Dog Man" for the last 5. He is well known by many for his special ability to make people laugh and love him just for being himself. Bill loved people and made even strangers feel as though they had known him all their lives. His favorite motto was "Never give up, Never surrender, and Never let them see you sweat". Bill was preceded in death by his father William Jacque Fike and sister Laura Jean Fike. He is survived by his wife Debbie Fike; mother Mildred M. Wenhart; stepfather Walter Wenhart; brother Christopher L. Fike and his daughters Jesse, Jordan and Jamie; brother James Fike and his wife Misty and their daughter Aleisha; stepdaughter Kimberlee R. Patterson and her children Elaina, Paris, Sailor-Belle, Lucienne and Rossi; as well as many friends and neighbors; and of course his best buddy "Buster" dog, Sugar and Kiddo dogs. EUL, GARRY D. Garry D. Eul, age 63, passed away on Thursday, August 21st in Stevens Point, WI after a year long battle with cancer. Garry left us to join his beloved wife (Christine) who went before him in 2003. Together they are sailing the heavenly oceans and riding the clouds on his Gold Wing motorcycle. Garry is survived by his son, Kevin (Tiffany) of Stevens Point; and eight beautiful grandchildren; and his mother, Carol, also of Stevens Point. A long time resident of Albuquerque and 30+ year employee with Honeywell, Garry leaves behind him many friends at work who really were family to him. He wished to especially thank Bill, Liz, Dan and Angel, Lisa, Nancy, and Theresa for their encouragement and help during the last year. Also missing him will be his special friends at The Mule Barn Cafe, Bob and Joanie Thorn of ABQ, Rick and Lois Hansen of Minnesota and many other treasured friends and extended family around the country. Garry had long-time relationships with many fellow boaters at Lake Conchas, NM and loved sailing in the Bahamas with Chris. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scattered on designated lakes in the US and Canada and in the Bahamas at later dates - where he also placed Chris's. ELLERD, WILLIAM AUDY William Audy Ellerd, 86, joined his parents William and Hulda Ellerd, sister Oma Waller, sons Billy Don Ellerd and Jack Ellerd, daughter Carolyn Ellerd, grandson Ivan Ellerd and numerous other relatives on Sunday, August 24, 2014. He was born March 24, 1928 at Abernathy, Texas. He married Nelda Hinson on August 31, 1950. William had five (5) children, six (6) grandchildren and five (5) great-grandchildren. William is survived by his loving wife of almost 64 years, Nelda Ellerd; his daughter Marilyn Townsend (John); his son Bruce Ellerd (Frances); his brother Tully Ellerd; his sister Lillie Verl Moraites; his grandchildren Curt Bilberry, Kierstin Garcia (Phillip), Kyle Townsend, Salina Ellerd (Anthony), Melanie Ellerd; along with his great-grandchildren Brandon Hott, Merissa Torres, Anthony Torres, Isaac Torres, and Damian Garcia. There will be a Memorial Service on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 9:30 am. Location is Copper Point Church at 10500 Copper Avenue, Albuquerque, NM 87123. William was in the Raymond G Murphy VA Hospital in Albuquerque during his last weeks of life. The nurses and doctors on that unit treated him with the utmost respect and thanked him daily for his service in the Air Force. The family would like to thank everybody who cared for William during his stay in the VA Hospital.
DERDEN, DORIS BEVERLY (MUSGRAVE) Age 85, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1993 and a former resident of Houston, TX, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Edward Derden; daughter, Kathie Derden Bailey of Houston, TX; granddaughter, Ashley Taylor Derden Watterson and husband, Jeremy of Houston, TX; and many friends in Texas and New Mexico. Doris was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Gregory Young Bailey. She attended Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Doris retired from the Houston Symphony in 1993. She was a violinist. She had also played for the Roswell Symphony. Mrs. Derden traveled the world with different symphonies and recorded with many symphonies. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:00 am at FRENCH - Rio Rancho. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. CORCORAN, CAROLYN Carolyn Corcoran age 80, a resident of Grants, NM since 1976, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, T. A. Corcoran Jr.; children, Venita Elliott and husband, Bill, T. A. Corcoran III, Jill Aldaz and fiance, Rick Rougemont; grandchildren, Roxanna Elliott and husband, Donavon Lish, Kimberly Elliott, and Robert Aldaz; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ann Embrey and Beverly McCloskey. Carolyn enjoyed reading. She was a member of several bridge clubs. She volunteered at the Cibola General Hospital Auxiliary and she also worked at the Thrift Shop. Carolyn was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. As Carolyn had requested, cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2014, 11:00 a.m., at the Grants Memorial Park Cemetery. COLTER, WILLIAM dearly loved, age 64, passed away on August 22, 2014 after a long bout with cancer. He was born in Missouri and has been a resident of the Albuquerque area since 1974. He was an employee of Innovage, the Pace Program, where he made many good friends of both the employees and the participants. Bill is survived by his wife Nancy; mother Velma; sisters Carol Reid and Judy Rowlett, both of Missouri; and many nieces and nephews of whom he all loved. He left a legacy of kindness, compassion and generosity to everyone who knew him. Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at this time. COATS, JOSEPHINE MARCELLE O'ROURKE Age 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1988, died Monday, August 18, 2014. She is survived by her daughter, Cecelia Kleinschmidt; a grandson; three grand- daughters; and six great-grandchildren. Marcelle was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Lt. Col. J.C. Coats who served for 30 years in the United States Air Force and her daughter, Dianne Underwood. Marcelle loved traveling, antiquing, and was an avid bridge player. Her greatest joy was entertaining her friends and she was quite the hostess. She was active in numerous organizations throughout her life both as a military wife and a resident of Four Hills. Marcelle touched many peoples lives and will certainly be remembered by friends and family. CHAVEZ, MERCIE Age 76, went to be with the Lord August 28, 2014. Mercie was born October 8, 1937 in Carnuel, NM. She is survived by her son, Juan J. Herrera and wife Beatrice; granddaughter Jazmine; grandsons Louie and Tony; sister Emma Cano; brother Clarence Herrera and his wife Diana. Mercie was preceded in death by her husband Paul Chavez; her parents Jose and Florinda Herrera; brother Pablo Herrera; and sister Dorothy Garcia. She was an avid volunteer with Humanity Quilters and has been a longtime active member of Holy Child Parish, which she dearly loved. Mercie was also in the womens guild and faithfully prayed the Rosary daily. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, 6:00 pm, September 2, 2014 at French - Lomas. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 10:00 am, September 3, 2014 at Holy Child Parish, Canuel, NM with burial to follow. CARLSON, CHARLES WAYNE Age 85, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2014. Born April 17, 1929, he is survived by his four children, Catherine Carlson Plummer, Krista Carvajal, Cheryl Carlson Altares, and Charles Carlson, Jr. He is also survived by nine grandchildren (Karin, Victoria, Elliot, James, Danielle, Alexis, Timothy, Erin, and Colleen); four great-grandchildren (Madison, Jackson, Cole and Derrick). We all loved him dearly and will miss him so much. Charles attended Gettysburg College, where he met the love of his life, Virginia, who preceded him in death shortly before their 60th wedding anniversary. Charles completed the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary and a Master of History at University of Pittsburgh. He had a long and rich career as a pastor, teacher and musician. He sang with the Bach Choir in Bethlehem for more than a decade, and performed at Carnegie Hall with the Philadelphia Symphony. He enjoyed many years traveling all over the world with Virginia, and always tried to help those in need. In his retirement he volunteered regularly for Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. Memorial services will be held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at Tree of Life Lutheran Church, Saturday, September 6 at 10:30 am. BROWN, J. O. J.O. Brown passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. He was born as an only child to Jesse O. Seaton Brown and Mary Francis Burris Brown in Franklin, KY on September 7, 1932. He moved with his parents to Claremore, OK in 1946 and graduated from Claremore High School in 1950. While attending Wichita University, he joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he served four years and then was in the active Reserves for another 10 years. He married Donna Sue Cook on July 16, 1954, and together they reared their three daughters in Tulsa, OK, where he completed his education at the University of Tulsa. He was Manager of the Data Processing Department of Tulsa Public Schools and then Vice President of Data Processing at Oklahoma Blue Cross Blue Shield before relocating to Albuquerque in 1982. He retired in 1987 from Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico, where he was Vice President of Data Processing and Computer Services, and has been financial officer and treasurer of Leeco Grounds Management, Inc. for the past 27 years. As a member of Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, he served in several ministries and in helping the Business Administrator with financial duties. He and his wife also enjoyed worshipping with their family at Hope Evangelical Free Church and later moved their membership to Hope, yet love their many friends at both fellowships. He enjoyed reading and has an extensive library on The American Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I and II, by Christian authors on the history of the Christian church and commentaries on books of the Holy Bible. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and have done extensive traveling around the world and in the USA to visit their daughters, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. He was a loyal friend and employee, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Everyone who knew him admired the combination of kindness and integrity that his life represented. He is preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife; three daughters, Danene Brown Vincent-Gray and her husband Gregg Gray of Rogers, AR, Tresha Gayle Brown Vogt and her husband Rick Vogt of Portland, OR, and Melissa Anne Brown Funnell and her husband Dale Funnell of Albuquerque; 15 grandchildren; 15-great-grandchildren; and many loving nephews and nieces from his wife's large family. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014, 11:00 a.m., at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Rd. NE. BLACK, MARCIA GENE was born on July 9, 1924 in Decatur, IL and passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014 in Albuquerque at the age of 90. Marcia worked as a registered nurse at the Los Alamos Hospital for many years. Marcia was preceded in death her daughter Rhonda. She is survived by her beloved husband Roy Black of Albuquerque; son Richard W. Black of South Carolina; and several grandchildren, as well as many friends and family who will greatly miss her. BIBLE , ELMER J. JR. On Saturday, August 23, 2014, our beloved Elmer J. Bible Jr., known as "Bud" by his family and friends, passed away peacefully at his home. Gilbert Sierra, his partner of 31 years, was at his bedside. Bud was born in Knoxville, TN in 1936. In 1970, he came to New Mexico on vacation and decided to stay when he fell in love with "The Land of Enchantment." Employed by Presbyterian Hospital, he worked in various nursing positions including Hospital Supervisor. Bud retired from Presbyterian Hospital in 1999. He enjoyed his retirement and kept busy with his love of crocheting, quilting and gardening. He won numerous New Mexico State Fair ribbons in both quilting and crocheting. Bud also enjoyed traveling around the U.S., Europe and Mexico. He is survived by his Partner in Marriage, Gilbert R. Sierra; his niece Risa Heussner and her husband Steve; his nephew, Gregory Smith; his great-niece, Kimberly, and great-nephew, Eric Heussner; a cousin, Sandy Smith; his extended family and many friends. Bud was preceded in death by his father, Elmer J. Bible Sr.; his mother, Ruth Edens Bible; his sister, Louise Smith, and brother-in-law, Richard Leon Smith. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Monday, September 1, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at FRENCH - University. BERRY, DAVID LINSON David Linson Berry, the only child of Harold and Catherine Berry, was born on July 10, 1924 in South Solon, OH. David passed away on August 22, 2014 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. David served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He graduated from Wittenberg College, Springfield, OH. David and his bride, Barbara, moved to NM where he attended the University of New Mexico participating in the Masters of Fine Arts Program. David was a passionate artist but worked at Sandia Lab to support this passion until his retirement from the radar group. David, a 36 year recovering alcoholic himself, was proud that he was able to help others follow his example. He was a long time member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church and longtime resident of The Vineyard 55 + Community. A Memorial Service and Reception will be held on Saturday, September 6 at 2:00 PM at St. Thomas located at 425 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque.
