ESPINOSA, ROSEMARIE Z. age 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1953, died March 9, 2014. She was born April 20, 1925 in San Luis, Colorado to Nesrala Zegob and Eduviges (Edna) Vigil. Her father ran the town's general store. She attended boarding school at St. Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Colorado. While there, she met her future husband, Theodore Charles Espinosa, who was a student at the Holy Cross Abbey, also in Canon City. After her graduation from the Academy, she attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, earning a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Philosophy. She and Teddy were married August 7, 1948, and went to live in Baraboo, Wisconsin while he completed an MA in Spanish Literature at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In May of 1949, their daughter Monica was born, and fifteen months later they celebrated the birth of their son Theodore Paul in August of 1950 and Ted's completion of his MA degree. They returned to the San Luis Valley and in November of 1951 welcomed Robert Jerome, who was followed by Peter Damian in February of 1953. While Ted taught and coached in the small town of Capulin, Colorado, Rosemarie worked full-time caring for their four very young children in their isolated country home a few miles outside of La Jara, Colorado. They endured frigid winters with few material comforts. Rosemarie would wash clothes and numerous diapers with a ringer washing machine, rinse them in large galvanized water tubs, hang them outside, and often return later to find them frozen on the line. In 1953, when Ted was offered a teaching position at Washington Junior High School in Albuquerque, they moved to their first Albuquerque home on the corner of Cedar and Silver. In July of 1957, David Leo arrived, and then there were five. When David entered school, Rosemarie also returned to school to earn her teaching credential. She was one of the original faculty members of Eldorado High School when it opened its doors in 1970. She taught Humanities and English there for over a decade. An innovative teacher, she developed unconventional teaching methods during her career. At one point she successfully defended herself before the APS School Board and a large gathering of concerned parents and citizens, because, while teaching about the Civil Rights Movement and believing in the importance of exposing students to a diversity of perspectives, she had invited representatives of the Black Panthers to talk to her classes about their programs. Following her years in the classroom, she went on to earn an MA in Educational Administration. She became the first Title IX officer for the Albuquerque Public School District, working to ensure gender equity for students, faculty, staff and administrators. She held this position until she retired in 1983. After retirement, she and Ted enjoyed years of travel throughout the United States, Latin America and Europe. They spent many happy summers in their home in Chama, New Mexico, relishing the cultural and geographical beauty of New Mexico and southern Colorado. Highly educated, mother of five, educator, administrator, advocate for women's rights, world traveler, Rosemarie Espinosa was a paradigm for the 21st century woman to come. She was an inspiration to many because of her intelligence, grace, and accomplishment. She is and will always be greatly missed. Rosemarie is survived by her children Monica J Espinosa of Albuquerque, Theodore Paul Espinosa and wife Marta Sanchez of Phoenix, AZ, Robert Jerome Gosper-Espinosa and wife Lisa Gosper-Espinosa of Santa Fe, NM, Peter Damian Espinosa and wife Kim Caird-Espinosa of Albuquerque, and David Leo Espinosa and wife Cindy Ruppert-Espinosa of Albuquerque; her grandchildren Natalia, Aaron, Maya, and Gabriel Espinosa of Albuquerque, Renata Espinosa, Dominic Espinosa and wife Yelena Mokritsky of New York, NY, Robert Theodore Espinosa of Boston, MA, Marisa Espinosa and husband Jaime Rodriguez of San Diego, CA, and Kiana Espinosa of Santa Clara, CA; her great- grandchildren Gabriel and Paul of San Diego, CA; brother Nesrala Zegob, Jr of Denver, Co; sister Joan O'Halloran of Cary, IL; numerous nieces and nephews around the US, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Theodore Charles Espinosa, and her parents, Nesrala and Edna Vigil Zegob. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated May 3, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Aquinas Newman Center on the campus of the University of New Mexico, with Father George Reynolds, O.P., Celebrant. Please visit our online guest book for Rosemarie Z Espinosa at www.FrenchFunerals.com
